About the role

The Staff Attorney will primarily assist with litigating and settling consumer litigation and arbitration matters under the supervision of Partners in Steptoe’s Consumer Litigation practice group.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with litigating and settling consumer litigation and arbitration matters
  • Manage individual litigation and arbitration matters
  • Review correspondence and pleadings
  • Report urgent issues to the supervising Partner
  • Manage calendars and deadlines
  • Conduct document review
  • Supervise local counsel
  • Draft pleadings and motions
  • Handle discovery
  • Communicate regularly with opposing counsel
  • Prepare client settlement recommendations
  • Draft agreements
  • Attend court appearances and attend arbitration merits hearings

Requirements

  • Strong academic credentials
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • The ability to multitask
  • Confidence in working with opposing counsel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with arbitration matters in JAMS or AAA
  • Defending financial institutions or commercial clients against claims under consumer protection, banking, or privacy laws
  • Experience in bankruptcy court (including adversary proceedings)

Qualifications

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school is required
  • Membership in the New York bar, active and in good standing, is also required

Pay

The anticipated salary range is $195,000 to $205,000. The actual base salary offered will depend upon the applicant’s experience and qualifications, as well as other job-related factors, including but not limited to relevant skills, education, certifications, or other professional licenses held.
