About the role

The P YE PS Technical Services Department of the P Power Supply Engineering Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has a management vacancy for the role of Manager. This position provides OEM-expert level field engineering and technical consulting services for Hawaiian Electric Company’s generating plants’ older vintage steam turbines and new technology.

Responsibilities

• Provides advanced engineering expertise and develops strategies in the performance of steam turbine overhauls and equipment repairs to address cost-effective maintenance.
• Provides engineering direction, develops, and conducts necessary testing and other strategies to resolve conditions of steam turbines and associated assigned equipment economically and reliably.
• Leads, instructs, coordinates, and directs assigned staff, outside consultants, and other experts in the performance of steam turbine overhauls, assessments, and maintenance to ensure appropriate cost-effective maintenance.
• Assesses equipment condition, evaluates repair alternatives, and makes timely and appropriate recommendations to maintain high-level reliability throughout the extended life of the components.
• Plans and forecasts critical steam turbine outage work, including maintenance recommendations, resource allocation, and vendor/consultant coordination, to ensure strategic goals and objectives are achieved.
• Researches sources (e.g., vendor documentation, technical bulletins, Peir Utility Turbine Groups) to plan, coordinate, and direct complex technical assignments expected to result in new or improved steam turbine operational and/or maintenance practices and procedures.
• Serves as Steam Turbine technical consultant for Power Supply (Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii Islands).
• Implements and maintains steam turbine visual condition assessment programs, using state-of-the-art techniques and online real-time monitoring and condition alerts.
• Leads NDE testing and evaluation to proactively predict and analyze steam turbine equipment failures and enlists support of other departments and/or consultants as needed to analyze and resolve problems.
• Maintains and distributes appropriate department records and statistics, ensuring Executive Management is aware of current conditions and potential risks for Steam Turbine Components.
• Provides Steam Turbine training for Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii Islands Generation personnel as needed.
• Performs economic evaluations, including both theoretical and actual cost/benefit analyses, and recommends cost-effective equipment modifications and/or additions.
• Facilitates, coordinates, develops, and supports various LEAN, reliability, and continuous improvement initiatives/processes/programs, including Root Cause Failure Analysis, Near Miss, LEAN activities, and Lessons Learned programs.
• Collaborates with Operations, Maintenance, Planning, and other departments to implement work process improvements and promote teamwork and a self-directed workforce to support quality initiatives and company values.
• Supports two-way communications to ensure a focused and well-informed workforce.
• Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned.

Requirements

• Thorough knowledge of engineering fundamentals in specialty areas (e.g., physics, chemistry, thermodynamics, power, analog and digital electronics, vector analysis, materials), normally acquired through advanced college-level courses or equivalent experience.
• Thorough knowledge of Steam Turbine-specific equipment design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
• Thorough knowledge of Steam Turbine materials engineering, including the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their inter-metallic compounds, and their mixtures (alloys).
• Thorough knowledge of rotational vibration monitoring, analysis, and mitigation techniques.
• Working knowledge of appropriate federal, state, industry, and company regulations, codes, and practices.
• Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications (e.g., spreadsheets, word-processing, project management).
• Working knowledge of LEAN concepts and processes.

• Ability to effectively communicate/negotiate with all customers and suppliers, both internal and external, through verbal and/or written interaction.
• Demonstrated presentation/facilitation skills to conduct presentations, meetings, and training for Executive and Power Generation personnel.
• Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy.

Experience

• Extensive experience (12 or more years) in plant operation and maintenance, with particular emphasis on steam turbine/combustion turbine overhaul, troubleshooting, operation, and maintenance planning.
• Six or more years as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Field Engineer highly preferable.
• Eight or more years with relevant utility experience highly desirable.

Pay

The hiring range for this position is $109,900.00 to $175,500.00. The selected candidate will be placed according to their skills and qualifications.
