Job Description
The High Voltage Testing Consulting Engineer will play a crucial role in the operation of our new HVL. Responsibilities include testing a wide range of electrical equipment and conducting high voltage tests for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) of failed transmission and distribution equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain high voltage test systems, including a 3,200kV impulse generator, 1,500kV AC, and 1,200kV DC test sets.
- Design support structures for testing high voltage power equipment.
- Oversee the fabrication of design structures by contractors.
- Assist in the maintenance of selected auxiliary mechanical systems.
- Facilitate the transportation and setup of high voltage equipment for testing in the laboratory.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality assurance teams to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
- Minimum 10+ years of relevant engineering experience or high voltage experience.
- HV Power Equipment Expertise: Extensive experience in laboratory, production, and field testing, as well as maintenance of HV substation equipment.
- Engineering Knowledge: Deep understanding of engineering theories, principles, and practices, applied across diverse assignments.
- Standards and Codes: Proficient in interpreting and using IEEE, IEC, CIGRE, NETA standards, guidelines, and codes.
- Leadership and Management: Strong organizational leadership, planning, and project management skills.
- Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication, including technical writing.
- Technical Consultation: Experienced in providing expert technical advice to engineers and management.
- Computer Applications: Skilled in using various software for engineering calculations (e.g., Matlab, Excel).
- Analytical Thinking: Ability to solve complex technical problems and interpret intricate instructions.
- Task Management: Effective in managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Engineering Techniques: Proficient in advanced engineering methods.
- Team and Independent Work: Equally effective working independently or in a team.
- Industry Recognition: Acknowledged by peers and management for expertise.
Desired Skills & Abilities
- ISO 17025 Accreditation: Familiarity with the ISO 17025 accreditation process.
- Business and Financial Acumen: Experience in handling business, financial, and contractual matters.
- Elevated Task Performance: Capability to occasionally perform tasks at heights up to 50 feet using an articulated boom lift or scissor lift.
Education Requirements
- Education Level: Degree required (equivalence not accepted in lieu of degree): Bachelor in Engineering
- For placement of a candidate in a Consulting Engineer title, the following criteria must be met:
- Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
- Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
Licenses, Certifications, or Qualifications
- Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE)
- Other: Depending on functional responsibilities and location of position, must review ANS 3.1 12/79, ANSI N18.1-1971 or ANSI/ANS 3.1-1993 and DOM-QA-1 as appropriate.
