Consultant Structural Engineer (Buildings)
About the role
This Opportunity Performs structural engineering work, under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, relating to the design of new and existing structures. Additional tasks may include coordinating with architects, contractors, and clients, managing projects independently, and supervising junior engineers. Ensures high-quality deliverables are produced and distributed on time and in compliance with project-specific construction codes. Demonstrates leadership qualities and a passion for growing within the structural engineering profession.
Responsibilities
- Performs structural engineering work relating to the design of new concrete, concrete masonry (CMU), steel, metal stud, light-frame wood, and mass timber structures for residential, institutional, and commercial projects.
- Develops structural engineering solutions to facilitate the re-use of existing building structures through structural retrofitting or resiliency assessments.
- Incorporates advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, while also utilizing future-ready solutions with structural engineering design standards.
- Contributes to project coordination through remote/in-person meetings, technical sketches, BIM modeling, and work site notebooks/logs.
- Verifies the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on securing structural soundness from loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence.
- Prepares data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and 2D/3D illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
- Maintains quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
- Affords assistance with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
- Contributes to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.
- Conducts engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.
- Affords assistance in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during site investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level risk mitigation activities.
- Affords assistance in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
- Works collaboratively with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local and privately funded improvement and development projects.
- Exercises responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adheres to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Performs additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- Master’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
- 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.
- Detailed understanding of seismic design procedures, ductility, and mechanics of different building materials.
- Basic knowledge of linear and non-linear finite element analysis and performance-based design.
- Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
- Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
- Knowledge with process and concepts for sustainability and reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances/greenhouse gas.
- Knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey technical concepts effectively and professionally to engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Educated self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
- Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- A member of and/or actively participating in local professional practice organizations.
- Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., ETABS, RAM Structural System, RAM Concept, SAP, Perform3D, spSlab, spColumn, VisualAnalysis, Revit, AutoCAD, etc.).
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

- Preferred Qualifications: California Professional Engineer (PE) License. 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred. Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Pay
Expected Salary (all locations): $95,000-$130,000
Schedule
Compensation is based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
