The Investment Controllership Reporting & Advisory team is seeking a driven individual to join as a Consultant on the Reporting & Advisory team. This role is ideal for someone curious about how Nationwide invests members’ premiums to generate returns and who enjoys working through complex accounting and reporting matters.

About the role

The Investment Controllership Reporting & Advisory team provides analysis and communication on complex investment accounting transactions, processes, and financial results. This role supports reporting initiatives, strengthens business partner relationships, and drives process improvement. The hired associate must reside within 35 miles of 1 Nationwide Plaza and will work a hybrid schedule: 2 days in-office and 3 days remote. This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization, and Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT extension program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks to support quarterly investment impairment analysis.
  • Support the investment consolidation evaluation process.
  • Perform portfolio-wide risk-related activities to ensure accurate reporting of Nationwide financial information.
  • Manage and cultivate strong, collaborative partnerships with business partners across internal teams.
  • Research and advise on accounting for new investment opportunities or unusual transactions.
  • Coordinate the research, analysis, and implementation of new and/or revised investment accounting policies and procedures.
  • Lead the development of recommendations to enhance, improve, or facilitate job performance, processing, or workflow.
  • Advise senior management on industry practices for acquiring, recording, analyzing, and preparing complex investment accounting transactions and statements.
  • Develop and submit complex investment accounting and financial transactions to ensure proper reporting.
  • Advise management on the accuracy of reports, forms, and data provided to internal and external clients.
  • Coordinate the development of actions or policies to address unfavorable financial situations identified through investment accounting analysis.
  • Stay up-to-date on GAAP regulatory changes and function as the specialist on changes impacting financial document submission.
  • Provide consultation to management on the internal impact of regulatory changes.
  • Act as project lead in the development and design of new and enhanced systems and processes within assigned areas.
  • Guide the preparation and analysis of complex pro forma financial data for compliance with new requirements.
  • Provide consultation to management in applying financial data and analysis to solve administrative and operating problems.
  • Consult on supplemental reporting requirements for the company and business areas.
  • Coordinate and lead the preparation of complex financial information for internal and external auditors, IRS, state examiners, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Provide consulting on the preparation of special reports and presentations.
  • Serve in a lead consultant capacity to other investment accountants on selected projects.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate studies in accounting, finance, or business administration; accounting major and degree preferred.
  • Progress toward CPA designation preferred.
  • Seven years of investment accounting experience, preferably in the insurance or financial services industries.
  • GAAP knowledge and understanding of functional business area regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of industry practices in complex financial statement preparation, including consolidation of companies/subsidiaries.
  • Understanding of taxation principles and their impact on financial statement preparation.
  • Experience with investment accounting and/or business computer systems.
  • Familiarity with company organizational structure, products, and services.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and solve investment accounting problems.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to interpret changes in financial reporting and legal requirements and their impact on financial statement preparation.
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer and related software using advanced techniques.
  • Ability to apply investment accounting principles, theories, and concepts to specialized, unique, or nonrecurring complex problems.

Pay

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure. Placement within the starting salary range will be determined by skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope, complexity, and location of the role, as well as market labor costs. The national salary range for this role is $97,000–$180,000, with an expected starting salary range of $97,000–$145,000. For part-time roles, compensation may be prorated based on hours worked relative to a full-time schedule.

Schedule

  • Hybrid schedule: 2 days in-office, 3 days remote.
  • Overtime eligibility: Exempt (not eligible for overtime).
  • May require extended hours during periods of high volume.
