Consultant - Distribution Planning Engineer

About the role

This position offers remote, hybrid, and in-office options depending on location. You'll play a pivotal role in upgrading, maintaining, and automating power distribution systems, collaborating with diverse teams to solve complex challenges in the energy sector.

Responsibilities

  • Perform protection and coordination studies for power distribution systems.
  • Identify and solve issues involving substations and multiple feeders.
  • Conduct scenario-based planning studies to recommend effective solutions.
  • Develop medium- and long-range distribution plans focusing on load relief, capacity, and reliability.
  • Create and maintain computer models and databases for electric distribution systems.
  • Conduct load forecasts, including DER, energy storage, and emerging electrification-related loads.
  • Collaborate with internal teams such as transmission, substation, distribution design, and SCADA Automation.
  • Work independently while coaching and mentoring less experienced engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in electric utility distribution planning.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following: CYME Dist, CYMTCC, Synergi, Milsoft Windmil, or ASPEN One-Line.
  • Experience with grid planning challenges such as protection and control, wildfire mitigation, FLISR, DER, system impact studies, sectionalizing studies, arc flash analysis, or energy storage.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIT/FE and PE licenses highly desired.
  • Knowledge of software automation and scripting (e.g., Python).
  • Basics and fundamentals of Protective Device Coordination and TCC review.
  • Knowledge of Arc Flash analysis and relevant standards (IEEE 1584, OSHA 1910.269 App E, NFPA 70E).
  • Proficiency in developing data analysis tools within Excel, Python, or major data analysis environments.

Schedule

This role is designated as remote, with flexibility to primarily work from home. In-office presence may be required for client meetings, team events, or training sessions.
