Construction Teams Field Manager II

About the role

The Field Manager II (FMII) will oversee the work that is performed by Habitat carpentry crews, ensuring that construction best-practices are upheld, quality standards are achieved, and safety protocols and regulations are correctly observed. The FMII works to level-up the skills of Habitat’s carpentry site crews and manages assigned carpentry crews to deliver projects that are completed safely, efficiently and meet Habitat standards.

Responsibilities

• Manage Field Work (75% of time)
  • Regularly visit all assigned active work sites to ensure crews perform work safely, meet work-quality expectations, and complete projects on-time and on-budget
  • Communicate effectively with people at all levels
  • Oversee a variety of field work concurrently: ranging from new construction, rehab, and repair
  • Ensure assigned sites prioritize worker and client health and safety; train carpentry team to appropriately implement safety procedures
  • In partnership with other Field Manager, allocate staff members with proper safety equipment, tools, vehicles, work and storage space required to perform their duties
  • Train carpentry team to level up skills
  • Advise on project scheduling and assignments
  • Advise on projects that require complex carpentry solutions, planning, and oversight
• Staff Management (25% of time)
  • Supervise assigned carpentry staff
  • Support Director of Repair with carpentry hires
  • Coach site carpentry crews on skills, task planning and management, crew leadership, and construction best practices
  • Provide prompt and professional performance feedback, training, and follow-up for members of site crews; conduct annual and mid-year evaluations as required
  • Collaborate with Director of Repair and Construction Teams Field Manager I on trainings and continuing education opportunities for site crews
  • Develop carpentry skill standards that outline career development pathways for carpentry staff
  • Train and support site crews in the best approaches for successful volunteer engagement; advise Build and Volunteer Dept leadership on the best use of volunteers in various areas
  • Contribute to creation and management of weekly staff schedule
  • Other duties as assigned including, but not limited to: support repairs team with home inspections and development of work scopes as needed

Requirements

• Strong hands-on carpentry background working in a residential construction setting; minimum of 10 years of related field experience
• Minimum 5 years of experience managing direct reports
• Demonstrated ability to oversee a variety of concurrent projects with ability to modulate between attention-to-detail and big-picture goals
• Effective communication, planning, and organizational skills
• Demonstrated experience managing tasks and projects
• Basic computer and tech competencies: ability to check and send emails, operate a tablet/iPad to utilize project management programs and communication software
• Understanding of the Habitat for Humanity philosophy and the desire to promote it
• Professional attitude and strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with volunteers and in diverse populations
• Ability to maintain posture of respect and compassion when working with people who are in difficult life circumstances
• Valid driver’s license with no major violations in the last 3 years

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to read drawings
• Understands project budgets and scopes
• Understanding of energy efficiency and house-as-a-system best practices
• Knowledge of or experience in a variety of building trades: plumbing, electric, HVAC, masonry, roofing
• Familiarity with local building codes and permitting process

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform all construction duties, such as: lifting up to 50 lbs; working in unconditioned workspaces in the heat of summer and cold of winter
• Comfortable working at heights and on ladders and scaffolding
