Construction Risk Engineering Consultant Subcontractor Default Insurance

About the role

Our construction risk engineering group helps protect property, profitability, and employees. In this role, you will provide risk engineering consultation to Underwriters, Claims Managers, and our construction contractor partners, specific to AXA XL’s Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI) product. You will work collaboratively with Claims to manage and evaluate subcontractor default claims, support account Risk Engineer colleagues to assess lessons learned and improvements needed to reduce the overall cost of risk, and identify risks and trends across our business that drive the success of the SDI program.

You will also work with Underwriting to evaluate contractor customer risks and assess relevant controls for a successful SDI program. Applying your robust construction management experience, you will work with a broad range of contractor customers to provide consultation, training, and support of the SDI program—with the purpose of reducing the overall cost of risk for both the contractor partner and AXA XL. When potential or actual subcontractor defaults occur, you will work with the insured to manage, mitigate, document, and resolve the claim in an efficient, fair, and effective manner.

Responsibilities

• Provide support for the complete SDI program lifecycle, including consultation, training, assessment of controls, risk identification, customer feedback, project visits, and related customer meetings.
• Demonstrate the value of risk control and claims management services to create customer satisfaction.
• Provide Risk Engineering support for notices of claim, including review of circumstances of default, stakeholder conference calls, identification of planned actions, communication, and support of the entire claims process.
• Deliver risk improvement recommendations and feedback tailored to individual contractor partners to reduce the overall cost of risk, including management, mitigation, and documentation of subcontractor default risks.
• Enhance the SDI product by developing protocols and tools that reduce the overall cost of subcontractor default risk, including assessing national, regional, and local industry trends and developing relevant solutions to keep the SDI product at the forefront of industry solutions.

Requirements

• Extensive direct construction experience, which may include contractors, subcontractors, owners, or other related businesses.
• Robust working knowledge and understanding of the entire construction project lifecycle, including preconstruction, estimating, purchasing, project management, and project closeout.
• Ability to apply construction experience to a broad range of customers, consult effectively on wide-ranging construction management practices, identify exposures, assess controls on complex construction accounts, and adapt procedures relevant to the contractor’s exposures, practices, and culture.
• Direct experience with subcontractor prequalification, subcontractor selection, contracting, project/subcontractor management, scheduling, quality management, construction claims, and default management is valuable.
• Strong communication skills to engage with a broad range of customer and underwriting partners, listen effectively, make sound assessments based on written procedures, discussions, and observations, and translate technical information into understandable recommendations that influence action.
• Proven ability as a self-starter who manages their schedule and resources, assesses workload in light of business priorities, and directs efforts accordingly while working remotely.
• Experience working collaboratively as part of a team, proactively across lines of business, and effectively with internal and external partners on special projects and furthering industry and business goals.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
• Ability to travel 25-40%.
• A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a similar combination of education and experience is required.

This position can be based in other locations if qualifications merit. You will report to the Risk Engineering Manager for Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI).

Pay

The U.S. base salary range for this position is USD 91,400 – 159,900. Actual pay will be determined based on skills, experience, and location.
