S&ME is searching for motivated, full-time Construction Materials Engineering Technicians at all experience levels to join our Construction Services group in Greenville, North Carolina.

Responsibilities

  • Performing field and laboratory testing on construction materials like concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates.
  • Collecting and preparing samples for analysis.
  • Interpreting test results and preparing detailed reports.
  • Working closely with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure all work meets specifications and safety guidelines.
  • Experience shifting work hours based on project demands and weather, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half).
  • Occasional travel to support other offices is covered with per diem and lodging.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in a related field preferred for advanced levels.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) valid for driving in the United States, with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate a company-assigned vehicle, including trucks and SUVs.
  • Willingness to complete a background check, driving record check, and drug screen upon offer of employment.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Associate Technician/Technician I: 0-2 years relevant experience.
  • Technician II: 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an Associate's degree.
  • Technician III: 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an Associate's degree.
  • Technician IV: 5+ years of relevant experience; prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus.

Certifications: Industry certifications such as American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician, and/or International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils).

Key Competencies:

  • Strong English communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Basic math proficiency, including understanding of measurements and units of weight.
  • Understanding of a fluctuating schedule and interest in occasional travel.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Hands-on work in outdoor environments, using Company-provided Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day).
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50 lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment).
  • Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise.
