About the Role

Black & Veatch is seeking a Construction Management Practice Leader for the Southern California region. This prominent leadership position works across Southern California Operations, National Program Management/Construction Management Solutions Group, and National Construction Operations. The role focuses on expanding the region’s presence, winning new work, driving industry-leading project performance, and building a best-in-market Construction Management practice. Key success metrics include consistent annual growth in new business volume.

The Construction Management Team has an extensive portfolio of current projects, including marquee water treatment facilities, dams, tunnels, and water conveyance systems.

Responsibilities

  • Strengthen Black & Veatch’s brand for 3rd Party Construction Management in Southern California by maintaining visibility with clients and teaming partners.
  • Serve as an internal champion for Construction Management with local leadership, including Execution Executives, Client Directors, and Project Managers.
  • Support the development of Construction Management solutions through thought leadership and innovation addressing client needs.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Lead or support early opportunity identification, pursuit and capture plans, strategy development, and pre-positioning.
  • Build effective relationships with teaming partners.
  • Identify gaps and suggest improvements to current tools and processes.
  • Develop resources to support Construction Management execution, including mentoring and hiring key talent.
  • Serve as Project Director, Program Manager, or Construction Manager on major projects to support pursuits and contract execution.
  • Assist in developing and implementing Business Plans and Client Capture Plans.
  • Provide marketing and business development leadership, including opportunity evaluation, teaming, and pursuit strategies.
  • Lead and support proposal development and project execution.
  • Participate in professional societies (e.g., CMAA, AWWA, WEF, ASCE) through technical advice, presentations, and papers.
  • Promote Communities of Practice in Program Management, Asset Management, Treatment Facilities, Water Conveyance Systems, Dams, and Tunnels.
  • Act as Project Director or Project Manager for assigned clients, pursuits, and projects.
  • Champion recruiting efforts, including developing hiring plans, identifying candidates, and leading recruitment.
  • Provide mentorship and coordinate staff assignments.
  • Support regions, Client Directors, and Project Managers in achieving safety, quality, financial profitability, and technical performance goals.
  • Develop annual goals and Individual Development Plans for assigned professionals.
  • Actively participate in project execution as required.
  • Manage project teams, with team composition varying by project.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Advanced degrees are a plus.
  • 20+ years of Construction Management experience delivering major infrastructure projects.
  • 20+ years of client business development and proposal development experience.
  • Experience serving as Construction Manager on major infrastructure projects exceeding $100M in construction costs, including:
    • Water/Wastewater facilities
    • Pump Stations
    • Water/Sewer pipeline systems
    • Water conveyance systems, dams, tunnels
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background checks, drug screens, and motor vehicle records searches.

Certifications

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License in California (required).
  • CMAA Certified Construction Manager (CCM) (preferred).
  • Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Certificate (preferred).

Work Environment

  • Hybrid or flexible work options may be available after the first 90 days of employment.
  • Extended periods of sitting, standing, and computer usage.
  • Ability to use video/audio conferencing tools for internal and external communication.
  • Travel to client sites required.

Pay

Annual compensation range: $193,787 – $329,429.
