Construction Laborer

About the role

The General Laborer is responsible for safely performing a variety of construction duties to assist highway, utility, grade crews, or at various on-site plant locations. This position involves manual tasks and will be performed per the supervisor's instruction, with minimal direct supervision for more complex jobs.

Responsibilities

• Highway Laborer:
  • Prepares ground surfaces for the road building process.
  • Removes debris from the construction path.
  • Operates ground compactors, levels and rakes dirt, sets string markers, and removes items within the paving area.
  • Sets up fencing, barricades, and/or safety cones to block off the work area.
  • Prepares manhole covers, openings, and water lines; may insert risers as needed.
  • Shovels and rakes asphalt behind the paver machine, levels asphalt with a rake, and digs out manhole covers and water valve boxes buried by asphalt.
  • Cleans asphalt off tools and equipment after each workday.
  • May assist with operating equipment such as paver, roller, backhoe, or water truck if trained.
  • Performs other laborer tasks including cutting concrete or asphalt with a saw and sweeping.
• Utility Laborer:
  • Hand shovels to prepare ground trenches for pipes and utility lines.
  • Digs up existing pipes and lines, including water, sewer, conduit, and other utilities.
  • Attaches trench boxes and pipes to chains or guide wires for lifting and moving by heavy equipment operators.
  • Installs shoring materials and guides pipes into place.
  • Connects pipes using tools, lubricants, glue, grout, etc.
  • Builds couplings, connectors, and mechanical joints using various tools and parts.
  • Cuts pipe to size and sets up/operates laser level tripods and pipe lasers.
  • May operate equipment such as front-end loader, excavator, backhoe, or skid steer if trained.
• Grade Laborer:
  • Hand shovels and rakes to perform groundwork.
  • Cuts concrete with a saw as needed to finish grades.
  • Removes and replaces sewer/manhole/sump castings and covers.
  • Assists the Grader with grading tasks.
  • May operate equipment such as skid steer if trained.
• Crusher Laborer:
  • Performs machinery maintenance and repairs.
  • Unplugs and shovels off conveyors and screens.
  • Changes out screens, rollers, cone liners, etc.
  • Repairs conveyor problems and greases moving machine parts.
  • Performs crusher machinery set up and take down, including running cables/hoses, setting up blocks, assembling/disassembling machinery, and operating skid steer.
  • Keeps crusher machinery area clean of debris and shovels aggregate.
  • Moves excess materials from around the crusher machinery.
• Plant Laborer:
  • Participates in daily THINK/TRACK and weekly safety meetings.
  • Assists in plant production of materials and ensures efficient working conditions.
  • Stockpiles materials and feeds the hot plant from stockpiles.
  • Ensures assigned equipment is properly maintained, clean, and in safe working order.
  • Prepares plant for seasonal operations and performs shutdown procedures.
  • Operates front-end loader, skid steer, end dump truck, and other heavy equipment as needed.
  • Performs plant maintenance and repairs, including welding tasks.
  • Performs set up and take down of traveling plants at different job site locations.
• Other Duties:
  • Uses various equipment, hand, and power tools.
  • Picks up and/or delivers construction materials at job site locations.
  • Performs job site clean-up and assists with flagging and traffic control as needed.
  • Maintains all tools and equipment in a safe and clean condition.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous related experience in the construction field is a plus.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and write instructions and correspondence.
• Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals).
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
• Ability to work well with others in group or one-on-one settings.
• Knowledge of inventory and order processing systems; familiarity with job-specific computer systems for ticketing and two-way radio communications.
• Current and valid driver’s license.
• May be subject to drug testing and physical agility testing.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment.
• Occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach above shoulders.
• Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50-75 lbs.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment

• Occasionally exposed to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather, extreme cold, and heat.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
