Construction Laborer and Equipment Operator

Position Overview

The Equipment Operator is responsible for safely performing a variety of construction duties to assist the highway, utility, grade crews or at various on-site plant locations.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

• Operate equipment safely and efficiently by utilizing equipment within its designed parameters.
• Responsible for safe slopes on excavations and proper barricading.
• Perform minor servicing and maintenance or refer major problems to the supervisor.
• Keep machines clean and maintained.
• Keep time and material records.
• Knowledge of weight requirements of loads leaving the pit.
• Travel to and from various locations.
• Assist labor crew including shoveling of materials and daily plant operations.
• Promptly communicate with paving crew on any flaws in material.
• Take action to avoid potential hazards or obstructions.
• Other tasks and duties as assigned to meet business needs.
• Regular and timely attendance.
• Participate in and promote an inclusive work environment.

Other Duties

• Uses various equipment, hand and power tools.
• Picks up and/or delivers construction materials at job site locations.
• Performs job site clean-up.
• Assists with flagging and traffic control as needed.
• Maintains all tools and equipment in a safe and clean condition.
• Other duties as assigned per supervisor

Qualifications

• To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
• Education/Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred. Previous related experience in the construction field is a plus.
• Work Requirements: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondences and memos. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

• The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 50-75 lbs.
