Construction Inspector III

About the Role

This is the advanced journey level class in the Construction Inspector series. Positions at this level perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties, including functional and technical lead over lower level inspection staff. Employees are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to their assigned area of responsibility, which includes traffic control, streets, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, driveway pads, water, wastewater, sewer, and storm drainage projects.

Responsibilities

• Inspect a variety of construction projects to ensure compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and City-approved plans.
• Perform plan checking functions and monitor new installations for compliance with specifications; inspect all materials brought to construction sites.
• Provide accurate documentation of construction inspection work, including daily logs, source books, change orders, environmental permit records, testing frequency reports, work order close-out documents, and reimbursement requests.
• Coordinate construction activities with other agencies and act as a liaison between contractors and project managers on inspection issues.
• Respond to citizen requests and complaints regarding construction projects.
• Perform tests at construction sites (e.g., asphalt, concrete, soil, water) and coordinate testing with City and private labs.
• Verify traffic control placement for correctness and safety; coordinate with barricade inspectors as needed.
• Inspect contractor work for compliance with drainage specifications, regulations, and ordinances; issue violation notices or citations as required.
• Investigate complaints from the public and businesses; determine corrective actions within established regulations.
• Report field changes that may require design modifications and review material test reports.
• Ensure enforcement of the sidewalk ordinance through certified notification and verify excavation work meets specification requirements.
• Conduct final and warranty inspections; submit corrections, remedies, or deficiencies to the project Engineer.
• Attend meetings, seminars, and training programs; comply with safety program requirements.

Requirements

• Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in building and construction trades or engineering.
• Four (4) years of construction or construction inspection experience, including one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.
• Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License (or ability to obtain by date of hire).
• Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

• Office and construction site environment with travel between sites.
• Exposure to computer screens, heat, cold, inclement weather, and heavy construction equipment.
• Physical requirements include walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
