About the Role

Construction Inspectors spend the majority of their time working on projects performing construction-related inspection requiring specific certifications and/or experience. Inspections may cross multiple disciplines or focus on a specified area of expertise including structural steel, concrete, masonry, fireproofing, and more. Work includes visual/physical inspection and field testing to verify conformance with plans and specifications, as well as preparing inspection reports and documenting observations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily inspection of construction projects to monitor quality and adherence to building code requirements, construction drawings, and project specifications.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare clear documentation of findings and results, including inspection reports and nonconformance records.
  • Perform basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager.
  • Communicate findings to the Project Manager and collaborate with the project team on solutions to potential issues.
  • Interact with clients and site personnel to provide input on appropriate resolution of findings.
  • Assist the Project Manager in developing the scope for testing and inspection services.
  • Coordinate pre-dispatch activities with Project, Department, and/or Office Managers.
  • Maintain equipment operation and calibration.
  • Assist more senior inspectors on large, complex projects.
  • Follow strict safety rules and practices, including pre-task planning and reporting safety issues to management.
  • Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Engineering Technology preferred.
  • Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in construction inspection.
  • A valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history may be required.

Qualifications

Required certifications (at least three or more from the following areas):

  • NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils).
  • NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical (Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist).
  • ICC certification (Reinforced Concrete, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting, Structural Steel – Welding).
  • American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification (Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT)).
  • ACI certification in one or more of the following areas:
    • Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
    • Concrete Strength Testing Technician
    Note: ACI certification not required if AWS CWI, ASNT Level II, VT, MT, PT, RT, or UT certification(s) have been obtained and concrete field/laboratory testing is not required.
  • Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation. Note: Nuclear Density Gauge certification not required if AWS CWI, ASNT Level II, VT, MT, PT, RT, or UT certification(s) have been obtained and soils testing is not required.
  • Other national, regional, state, and local materials-related certifications requiring experience and written examination may also be considered.
