Construction Inspector II
Job Summary
Under direction, is responsible for performing journey level work inspecting the construction of public works projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
About the Role
Working conditions are inside and outside with occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, flammable liquids, high noise areas, dust, and unfavorable fumes and vapors.
Essential Job Functions
- Inspects bridge constructions such as drill shafts, columns, embankments, wing walls, and guard rails.
- Utilizes surveying or construction equipment, occasionally lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, to inspect sewer mains for line and grade levels and conduct sewer air tests.
- Solves complaints from the general public on construction related activities.
- Congrates construction or repair activities between contractors and utility companies to avoid conflicts and to ensure a minimum disruption of services.
- Communicates and meets with the general public as well as with City and State officials regarding sequence of construction.
- Covers with other divisions, to clean sewers, set up traffic signs, and barricade road hazards when working around construction sites.
- Ensures that contractor conforms to safety rules and regulations, to include proper shoring trenches in accordance with OSHA rules and regulations.
- Prepares and maintains accurate daily project logs and prepares estimates.
- Ensures that all materials and work by the contractor is in accordance with standard specifications.
- Learns Specifications for Construction over Edward's Recharge Zone.
- Aids in training the Construction Inspector I's on inspection methods, report writing procedures, and related tasks.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
- Three (3) years of experience in public work project inspections.
- Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
- Must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Threat Assessment and a Criminal History Records check upon employment.
- Maintain federally mandated security clearance required to work at an airport at all times.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in civil construction.
- Experience with aviation construction a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of principles and practices of construction and engineering.
- Knowledge of methods, equipment, costs, and materials used in the construction industry.
- Knowledge of codes, regulations, and ordinances related to the construction industry.
- Knowledge of hazards, safety, and other OSHA regulations related to the construction industry.
- Knowledge of engineering mathematics.
- Skill in utilizing tools and equipment used in the construction engineering and surveying trades, to include Instrument/Level, Laser, Slum Cone, Scale, and Nuclear Density Machine.
- Skill in utilizing a calculator.
- Ability to interpret plans, blueprints and, specifications.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations.
- Ability to use independent judgment in making decisions.
- Ability to exercise firmness and tact in dealing with contractors, engineers, etc.
- Ability to interpret and properly apply codes and regulations.
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
