About the role
This position performs complex technical work performing a variety of engineering design and construction inspections on construction projects for specification compliance and related assignments.
Responsibilities
- Performs detailed surveys, plans, and specifications for construction projects as assigned.
- Prepares and reviews bid documents, engineering cost/material estimates, and permit applications for construction projects to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local standards.
- Inspects all aspects of street construction and resurfacing projects to assure compliance with approved plans and city standards; reviews payment requests for accuracy, coordinates third party testing with contractors.
- Inspects work in progress as well as completed work by contractors on city projects to assure all specifications have been met.
- Tracks quantities on city projects, troubleshoots issues to provide quality assurances, inspects water and sewer construction projects to assure compliance with approved plans and specifications.
- Coordinates with other departments and/or contractors on work sites for installing, replacing, and repairing water and sewer lines, manholes, and valves.
- Inspects water and sewer connections, street construction, sidewalks, driveways, drainage, etc. for final approval and acceptance in new subdivisions.
- Helps investigate complaints related to streets, driveways, storm drainage, water and sewer, etc.
- Keeps daily log of construction progress and work activities; reports in verbal and written form to upper management about status of project(s) in a timely manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED.
- Six (6) years of experience in street, concrete, utility, stormwater, and construction work.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license, or any valid driver’s license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
- Candidate shall obtain and maintain the following certifications within the first 18 months of employment: NCDOT QMS, Erosion Control Level I & II, Work Zone Safety, Confined Space Entry, and Trenching and Shoring as applicable.
