About the Role
The Construction Inspector provides construction inspection activities on assigned road construction projects. Must maintain positive working relationships with project engineers, contractors, subconsultants, clients, the traveling public, and CDOT or FHWA staff. Must adhere to quality assurance and safety standards. Required to maintain accurate progress reports in accordance with project requirements. Will provide inspection of construction activity to ensure the quality of construction and compliance with project plans, contracts, specifications, and special provisions.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a construction inspector for transportation projects by overseeing construction of roads, highways, and bridges to assure quality and safety.
- Review, inspect, test, and/or measure the work of contractors and consultants to ensure work is performed in accordance with contract requirements.
- Recommend to the project engineer approval and payment for acceptable and completed work, or rejection of non-conforming work.
- Maintain accurate daily records of construction site activities and produce required reports on progress, safety, quality, schedule, and budget status.
- Recommend project-related decisions based on assessment of construction performance and progress relative to contract requirements.
- Analyze construction schedules utilizing standard scheduling software such as Microsoft Project, Primavera, or equivalent.
- Prepare documentation in support of contract change orders or modifications when requested by the project engineer.
- Initiate communication of project-related details and concerns to the project engineer in a timely manner.
- Calculate and estimate quantities and costs of materials required for individual phases or elements of the project.
- Adhere to the requirements of RockSol's internal Quality Management System (QMS).
- Maintain assigned equipment and vehicles according to company procedures.
- Perform other construction inspection assignments as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to accuracy and detail.
- Competent verbal and written communication skills.
- Obtain and maintain required certifications for the position.
- Meet internal requirements for operation of company vehicles, maintain a valid driver’s license, and insurable driving record.
- Willing and able to travel to job sites, sometimes for extended periods (locations may include Colorado or the western U.S.).
- Working knowledge of safety and labor laws, quality control, and quality assurance principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous project management and/or inspection experience on DOT or FHWA road construction projects.
- Current Professional Engineer license.
- Construction materials testing experience.
Work Environment
- Work locations include road construction sites and field offices with regular exposure to all types of weather conditions during field work.
- Willingness to work extended hours, nights, and weekends if necessary to comply with client requirements or meet project deadlines.
- Exposure to loud noise levels at times (hearing protection provided).
- Must be able to routinely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Overnight travel may be required.
Pay
- Construction Inspector I: $25 to $35 per hour
- Construction Inspector II: $30 to $40 per hour
- Construction Inspector III: $35 to $45 per hour
- Construction Inspector IV: $40 to $50 per hour
Pay is based on education and experience.
