About the Role

HDR is seeking a qualified and experienced Construction Inspector to perform inspections for Roadway, Utilities, Civil, and Structures construction for the Interstate 5 (I-5) Improvement Project between Yale Avenue and State Route 55 (SR-55). The project is funded by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and administered by Caltrans. The Construction Inspector must have Caltrans experience and comply with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

• Perform construction inspection and engineering duties, including HMA, JPCP, CRCP paving, and subgrade inspection.
• Inspect structures such as large diameter CIDH piles, driven piles, columns, falsework, temporary shoring, CIP RCB Post Tension Bridges, Precast Girder Bridges, Bridge Deck construction and rehabilitation, CIP Retaining Walls, and Ground Anchor / Soil Nail Retaining Walls.
• Conduct electrical inspections for temporary and permanent traffic signals, FO communication systems, and Inner-connect systems.
• Inspect drainage, signing, striping, landscape, and irrigation systems.
• Perform quantity calculations, check grade and alignment, and ensure compliance with project plans and specifications to Caltrans Standards.
• Review project plans and specifications for errors and deficiencies, reporting findings to the Resident Engineer (RE).
• Identify and resolve construction-related problems, recommending engineering solutions to the RE.
• Assist in implementing and processing "Change Orders" as necessary.
• Adhere to safety and health codes, enforcing contract provisions for public and project personnel protection.
• Prepare daily diaries, calculations, records, reports, and correspondence in accordance with the Caltrans construction manual.
• Assist in preparing As-Built plans and documenting field conditions for claims reports.
• Perform Storm Water Pollution Prevention (SWPP) duties.
• Develop 4-scale drawings and grade/elevation sheets for bridge and wall construction, verifying grades using surveying principles and tools.
• Coordinate materials sampling and testing with Caltrans, METS, or other QA entities.
• Communicate with Caltrans RE, Structures Representative, contractor personnel, and stakeholders to resolve field issues.
• Assist with punchlists, closeout documentation, and final reports for structural work.
• Work flexibly, including days, nights, and/or weekends in heavy construction at elevated heights, if needed.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in construction inspection and management.
• Proficiency with MS Office (Word/Excel/Outlook).
• Proven problem-solving and documentation abilities.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Valid driver's license and compliance with HDR's vehicle policy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical school or associate degree.
• Previous Caltrans experience.
• Relevant industry certifications.
• Ability to interpret construction schedules.
• 10 years’ experience in construction inspection and management.
• Experience with Prolog, Primavera, etc.

Pay

The expected compensation range for this position is $85,000 to $115,000, depending on skills, experience, education, and geographical location.
