About the role
In this role, you will be responsible for inspecting, sampling, testing, and digitally documenting construction projects year-round to help ensure the mission of the Iowa Department of Transportation: Making Lives Better Through Transportation.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, sample, test, and document construction projects.
- Act as the liaison with Iowa DOT staff, government officials, contractors, and the public.
- Maintain detailed records of all project activities, including vouchers, as-builts, and progress reports.
- Perform mathematical calculations to ensure compliance.
- Assist the Maintenance Bureau by operating snow and ice removal equipment during winter operations.
Requirements
- High proficiency with typing and digital data entry.
- CDL permit upon hire, with endorsements/restrictions within 5 months of hire.
- Pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
- Drug screen and ongoing random drug and alcohol testing.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements and applicable restrictions.
- Completion of a comprehensive bridge inspection course.
- Residency within a defined driving time from the assigned work location.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus four years of full-time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.
- Four years of education and/or full-time experience in the same fields as above.
- Continuous experience in the state executive branch as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.
- Continuous experience in the state executive branch as a Highway Technician Associate.
Skills
High proficiency with typing and digital data entry.

Schedule
Shift: 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and the position is subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergency and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.
