Constable II
About the role
The Constable II provides protection for staff, patients, visitors, and associates by maintaining peace and order at Nemours Children’s Hospital in an armed capacity with firearm and taser.
Responsibilities
- Patrol hospital buildings, stairwells, and grounds both on foot and in vehicles to monitor interior and exterior areas, ensuring no threats exist and all exterior doors are secure.
- Prevent, detect, investigate, and report unlawful and unsafe activities within the Hospital and contiguous properties, including interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects; collecting, reviewing, and preserving evidence; and conducting searches and surveillance.
- Apply non-violent verbal intervention and de-escalation skills to mitigate disruptive behavior and dangerous activity; physically separate and control combative individuals when necessary.
- Provide first responder assessment of threats against staff, patients, and families.
- Conduct fire, evacuation, and miscellaneous emergency management drills as required by the State of Delaware, the Joint Commission, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
- Provide access control into the Hospital and specific areas, applying visitor restrictions and limitation measures as instituted by the Hospital.
- Provide one-on-one patient monitoring for inpatient units, including patient assistance for aggressive or unstable patients, escorts for patients in custody or visitors designated as tier two or three sex offenders, patient searches, and room safety sanitization for suicidal/homicidal patients.
- Exercise the powers of detention and arrest when necessary.
- Manage Public Safety entry stations that control access to the hospital.
- Respond to various types of alarms: door alarms, motion detectors, duress alarms, fire alarms, medical emergency alarms, and other Public Safety incidents.
- Provide escort of unauthorized individuals from the campus and prevent patient elopement and abduction.
- Perform all assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental rules and practices, and report violations to supervisors in a timely manner.
- Assist with crowd control and evacuations when required.
- Provide safe vehicle transportation or ambulance support for patients and families as needed.
- Enforce parking regulations and control traffic.
Requirements
- State of Delaware Constable License required.
- High School Diploma required; 1 year of specialized training beyond High School required.
- Valid State Driver’s license and ability to operate authorized hospital vehicles.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check and MMPI testing (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory).
- Must successfully obtain and maintain certification as a Constable in accordance with the Delaware State Police Professional Licensing section as established by Delaware Code (Title 10, Chapter 56).
- Must successfully obtain and maintain certification in the use of a Taser through a Certified Axon Instructor.
- Must successfully acquire and maintain CPR and AED certifications.
