Conservation Science Volunteer, Palmyra Program
About the role
The Conservation Science Volunteer position at Palmyra Atoll is an ongoing opportunity to support scientific studies and conservation initiatives. Volunteers will work on a variety of projects including native plant establishment and monitoring, invasive plant removal, seabird and shorebird monitoring, and maintenance of seabird social attraction project sites.
Responsibilities
- Support scientific studies and conservation initiatives
- Perform physical work in hot, humid, and wet conditions
- Work independently with minimal day-to-day guidance
- Adapt to dynamic field conditions and make sound decisions
- Participate in community-based or visitor-facing activities as needed
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED and 1 year of college-level coursework in biological sciences, conservation science, or natural resource management
- Experience with scientific studies and following established scientific protocols
- Ability to perform physical work in challenging conditions
- Comfort and sound judgement around waterfront environments
- Proficiency with MS Office programs
Qualifications
- Valid passport and visa/work permit for working/volunteering in the US
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification
- Physical examination showing good health, current tetanus vaccination, and health insurance
Skills
Desired skills include experience living in an island community, collaboration with island communities, excellent written and verbal communication, strong task management, and comfort using various hand tools and equipment.
Benefits
TNC provides up to $1200 of round-trip travel costs from the volunteer’s home to Honolulu, up to three nights stay at a TNC-selected hotel in Honolulu, round-trip travel to Palmyra from Honolulu, board and lodging at Palmyra, key supplies and equipment for the six-month volunteer term, remote medical coverage, and emergency evacuation insurance.
