About the role

The Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) is part of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (NDCNR), which manages and enhances Nevada's natural resources. The NDF oversees the Three Lakes Valley Conservation Camp (TLVCC) near Indian Springs, where inmates are trained in natural resource management and wildland fire suppression.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the operation of the TLVCC and coordinate inmate labor for conservation work projects.
  • Represent the NDF to other agencies and coordinate procedures with the Department of Corrections.
  • Negotiate agreements for inmate labor with NDF staff and local cooperators.
  • Ensure Conservation Crew Supervisors meet negotiated agreements and complete project hazard assessments.
  • Inspect projects for OSHA compliance and evaluate work in progress.
  • Develop and administer emergency action plans and audit equipment use, inventory, and funds.
  • Evaluate training needs and provide training opportunities for staff.
  • Prepare and review operational and incident reports, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Supervise the inmate work program, including budget maintenance, project planning, and performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate inmate activities with Department of Corrections administrators and ensure the missions of both agencies are met.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, forestry, natural resource management, business, or public administration, or related field, with one year of journey-level experience supervising work crews in fire suppression and/or resource management.
  • Associate's degree in forestry, natural resource management, business, or public administration, or related field, with two years of journey-level experience as described above.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education, with three years of journey-level experience as described above.
  • One year of experience as a Conservation Crew Supervisor III in Nevada State service.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of natural resource conservation principles and forest and rangeland management practices.
  • General knowledge of operation of computers, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the work of assigned personnel and inmate crews.
  • Ability to compile data, calculate inmate good time credits, establish cooperative relationships, and promote the services of the Conservation Camp program.
  • Ability to estimate time, labor, skill level, and equipment needed for conservation work projects.
  • Ability to develop and administer emergency action plans and audit equipment use, inventory, and funds.
  • Ability to evaluate training needs of staff and provide for training opportunities.
  • Ability to prepare budget requests and monitor expenditures.
  • Ability to coordinate inmate activities with Department of Corrections administrators.

Skills

  • Knowledge of wildland fire behavior and suppression tactics, techniques, strategies, and logistical support.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment used in conservation and wildland fire suppression work.
