Responsibilities
- Run and analyze conflict checks for new client matters and lateral candidates using the Firm’s conflicts and intake systems.
- Conduct detailed research on parties, including corporate structures, affiliates, and ownership, to ensure accurate identification of potential conflicts.
- Identify, assess, and resolve conflicts of interest, applying sound judgment and a practical, solutions-oriented approach.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to partners and internal stakeholders, balancing legal risk with business considerations.
- Manage the lateral, legal recruitment conflicts clearance process from initial submission through onboarding.
- Communicate directly with candidates regarding the conflicts process and expectations.
- Draft, review, and coordinate conflict waivers, engagement terms, and related documentation.
- Review outside counsel guidelines and advise on compliance with client requirements.
- Implement and maintain ethical screens to protect confidential information.
- Support attorney arrivals/departures and transitions (client/matter portability, ethical obligations, and records handoff).
- Partner with the General Counsel on developing and refining conflicts policies, procedures, training programs, and best practices.
- Assist in mentoring and training junior team members, as appropriate.
- Support the team’s wider risk management initiatives around new business intake, outside counsel guideline compliance, client risk assessments, vendor management, and records management as needed.
Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active New York bar admission in good standing.
- Minimum of 4+ years of experience in a law firm conflicts department or commensurate relevant conflicts experience through practicing in a large or mid-sized firm environment.
- Demonstrated ability to independently run conflicts checks, interpret results, and drive resolution of complex issues.
- Strong understanding of Rules of Professional Conduct across multiple jurisdictions.
- Ability to analyze corporate structures, transactional relationships, and litigation matters.
- Experience drafting conflict waivers and advising on ethical screens.
- Excellent judgment, with the ability to balance risk and business priorities in a practical way.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with confidence working directly with partners and senior stakeholders.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage a high volume of time-sensitive matters.
- Discretion and professionalism in handling confidential information.
- Knowledge and experience working with conflicts and intake systems, document management systems, and related processes in mid-to-large-sized law firms.
