About the role

The conductor/engineer position at Watco involves controlling and coordinating train movements to facilitate the unloading and loading of railcars. This role can be performed in various settings including railroads, industrial plants, and similar locations.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.
  • Follow written and verbal directions to complete assigned tasks on schedule.
  • Read, write, and communicate in English & understand basic math.
  • Learn from directions, observations, and mistakes and apply procedures using good judgment.
  • Read switching orders from designated person.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of train crews.
  • Operate locomotive in accordance with railroad rules and regulations.
  • Move locomotive backwards or forwards to switch and couple cars based on radio, hand signals, or starting signal.
  • Operate locomotive according to wayside signals, track warrants, and bulletins.
  • Receive and relay switching orders to the engineer.
  • Communicate with crew or other yard workers via radio.
  • Contact train dispatcher via radio for information or instructions concerning stops, delays, or oncoming trains.
  • Coordinate activities of switching crew from locomotive cab, caboose, or control tower.
  • Operate switches to facilitate shunting of cars and signal the engineer to move cars.
  • Perform minor repairs to couplings and air hoses and report any equipment requiring major repairs.

Requirements

  • Ability to pass training and required testing.
  • High School or GED equivalent.

  • Pass training and required testing.

Skills

  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Good judgment and ability to learn from mistakes.
  • Knowledge of switching orders and procedures.
  • Ability to operate locomotives safely and efficiently.
  • Communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical stamina and strength for manual labor.

Benefits
