About the role

As a software engineer in this mission-focused R&D environment, you will help design and develop software and high-volume data processing that supports real-time decision-making. You will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team delivering creative solutions for sophisticated remote sensing and satellite data systems contributing directly to Sandia's national security mission.

  • Develop software solutions and algorithms for remote sensing systems, including the capture, processing, exploitation, visualization, and distribution of real-time satellite sensor data.
  • Collaborate with architects, developers, technical leads, customers, and end users to collect requirements, design solutions, and deliver extensible software applications.
  • Analyze existing systems and develop new solutions that push the state of what is possible.
  • Propose and lead image processing and data-centric research and development projects.
  • Engage with diverse specialists in areas such as data fusion, signal and image processing, analytics, cloud computing, machine learning, modeling and simulation, service architectures, data management, and visualization.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. This position requires limited travel.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q and SCI security clearance.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field with extensive programming experience.
  • Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in diverse teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.
  • Software design and development using one or more of Java, C++, or Python.
  • Software engineering methodologies, user interfaces, databases, algorithms, data science, or analytics.
  • Experience with data messaging technologies (TCP/UDP/SFTP, ZeroMQ, Google Protobuf).
  • Experience with performant and scalable builds (Maven, CMake).
  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain an SCI.

Pay

Salary range is estimated at $102,400 - $199,700. Actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

About Our Team

The Product Management and Exploitation team (department 6328) develops innovative, unique-in-class tasking, collection, processing, exploitation, and dissemination systems for real-time national security missions. We support a robust RD&E portfolio that includes design, development, deployment, and continuous improvement of large, networked computing systems for detecting, tracking, and classifying targets of interest. We conduct research and development activities associated with the management, dissemination, and mining of large, critical data products, as well as user interface technologies to effectively communicate system information to system operators.
