About the role
The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) seeks a Computer Scientist to enable AI for science, focusing on agentic workflows that integrate diverse science domains, data types, and high-performance computing resources. This role involves developing systems that can autonomously plan and execute scientific workflows, as well as creating APIs for AI models to interact with simulations, data, and job schedulers. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in AI/ML, HPC systems, or scientific workflows, and be able to work collaboratively with various science application teams.
Responsibilities
- Build agentic systems capable of planning and executing scientific workflows on ALCF systems
- Develop services/APIs enabling AI models to interact with simulations, data, and job schedulers
- Create, maintain, and support high-quality software
- Collaborate with science application teams and contribute to broader scientific initiatives
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience, or Masters and 3+ years of experience, or PhD and 0+ years of experience in computer science, computational science, a physical science, engineering, or related field
- Comprehensive experience programming in one or more languages such as Python, C/C++, and familiarity with at least one AI framework (e.g., PyTorch)
- Experience with large language models, large language model frameworks, and agentic frameworks
- Ability to create, maintain, and support high-quality software
- Experience with version control software such as git
- Collaborative skills and effective communication abilities
Preferred Skills
- Experience with complex, large-scale scientific workflows
- Experience running simulations or AI workflows on supercomputers

Pay & Schedule
The position qualifies as "Hybrid Remote Work - Occasionally Onsite". The expected hiring range for this position is $94,486.00 - $147,398.94. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
Schedule
This position qualifies as "Hybrid Remote Work - Occasionally Onsite". The candidate will be expected to work from a remote location up to 20% of the time, with the remaining time onsite at Argonne National Laboratory.
