About the Role

The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Montana State University invites applications for a full-time Composite Research Engineer to develop processing methods for stretch broken carbon fiber and create carbon fiber parts, components, and prototypes. This role is part of a technical team executing a sizeable DOD contract to advance stretch broken carbon fiber for military rotorcraft. The successful candidate will lead development efforts, mentor students, and contribute to MSU’s mission while working with a diverse team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize processing methods for stretch broken carbon fiber products using composites manufacturing techniques (hand layup, fiber placement, automated forming, autoclave curing, RTM, bonding, etc.).
  • Manufacture development prototypes and samples, including measuring, cutting, and assembling carbon fiber materials.
  • Monitor, document, and maintain manufacturing processes in a clean and safe working environment.
  • Operate carbon fiber processing machines, ovens, and autoclaves; oversee maintenance and repairs of autoclave equipment.
  • Perform tests on research samples and design/develop hardware to support stretch breaking, forming, and testing tasks.
  • Commission and manage the Stretch Broken Carbon Fiber (SBCF) pilot plant, including the BC3 head, Litzler filmer, CDI machine, and Bobcat machine.
  • Manufacture SBCF materials using MSU’s SB2, BC3, or other stretch breaking machines.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts on the BC3 machine to resolve manufacturing issues.
  • Manage inventory and supply chain for complex parts manufacturing.
  • Assist in developing knowledge management systems and coordinate material testing across undergraduate, graduate, and faculty/professional staff.
  • Supervise additional operators, develop training materials, and build core competence in SBCF among MSU personnel.
  • Determine optimal stretch breaking techniques and execute autoclave/other processes for part manufacture.
  • Define and execute test plans to determine material properties of stretch broken fibers.
  • Assist in identifying suitable applications for stretch broken carbon fiber and manufacture prototypes to demonstrate its benefits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a relevant composites manufacturing environment.
  • Experience operating stretch breaking equipment and proficiency in basic strength of materials design and analysis.
  • Familiarity with composite manufacturing processes, including bagging, hand layup, autoclave curing, fiber placement, and automated forming methods.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills for conveying complex ideas to diverse audiences.
  • Flexibility to take on varied tasks to meet contract goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Laminate analysis training and experience.
  • Tooling design and manufacture experience.
  • Proficiency in CAD design, including SolidWorks.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse team members within and outside engineering disciplines.

Pay

Starting at $60,000 annually, commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications.
