Commuter Advisor 2026-2027

Commuter Advisors will focus on engaging commuter students, particularly first- and second-year students, both within the Commuter Corner and across campus. These roles involve building relationships, supporting student success, and fostering an inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Improve retention rates by forming meaningful relationships with students.
  • Reach out to and maintain contact with at-risk students through emails, texts, phone calls, and individual meetings.
  • Plan and implement programs that promote student engagement, including development, promotion, execution, and follow-up.
  • Work designated hours in the Commuter Corner and maintain the Adult and Veteran lounge, ensuring supplies are stocked, areas are clean, and students are supported.
  • Provide support and assistance to commuter students by answering questions about academics (registration, classes, majors) and connecting them with appropriate campus services (counseling, Student Success Center, STEM/Writing and Research Center).
  • Foster a welcoming environment in the Commuter Corner for all students, regardless of identity.
  • Celebrate the diversity of the commuter population through dialogue and events.
  • Create and implement strategies to address concerns such as low GPA, lack of engagement, and retention issues.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the Commuter Corner and restock supplies as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments (Mission and Ministry, Student Success Center, Recreation and Wellness Center) to enhance the student experience.
  • Participate in events such as Open House, Welcome Week, and other recruiting or welcoming activities.

  • Equity & Inclusion: Welcome new students into the Commuter Corner with an open mind to diverse ideas and celebrate the uniqueness of the commuter population through programming and events.
  • Leadership: Serve as a role model, approach tasks with confidence and a positive attitude, and assist commuters in transitioning to college through support and guidance. Explore personal leadership style and effectiveness.
  • Self-development: Gain awareness of personal strengths and their impact on work and collaboration. Transfer skills developed in this role to future employment.
  • Communication: Effectively communicate with staff and students, both verbally and in writing, and advocate for personal needs while expressing feelings appropriately.

Requirements

  • Must have completed at least one semester at Gannon University.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5.
  • Must be a full-time student.
  • Availability during business hours, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, with required presence on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 AM–12:00 PM.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Full-time undergraduate commuter student (does not live in Gannon housing).
  • Active participation in Commuter Life programs and familiarity with department functions.
  • Eligibility for Federal Work Study is preferred; continued employment may depend on maintaining eligibility.

Physical Demands

  • May be required to carry items and lift objects.
