Community Safety Official (CSO) Supervisor (Tech III)

The Division of Public Safety (DPS) at CU Boulder is seeking a Community Safety Official (CSO) Supervisor to support the overall mission of the University and CU Police Department. This role provides operational oversight and coordination within the CSO unit, collaborating with community partners and campus entities to address safety and security concerns.

Responsibilities

• Supervision
  • Directly manage CSO classified staff, including recruitment, hiring, training, and oversight.
  • Fulfill staffing requests in accordance with campus policies or direction from the Director of Community Safety.
  • Oversee coordination, communication, and job design for assignments beyond standard patrol duties.
  • Provide and review annual performance plans, conduct coaching/progress reviews, and issue annual performance evaluations.
  • Review report submissions and data collection from CSOs for accuracy, quality, and compliance.
  • Prepare procedures, general orders, and perform administrative duties.
  • Manage scheduling, work assignments, and resolve personnel issues.
• Security Operations & Patrol Oversight
  • Supervise CSOs responsible for lock/unlock procedures and routine security patrols (foot, bike, or vehicle).
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels, scheduling, payroll, and equipment management (radios, keys, etc.).
  • Conduct site inspections, monitor radio traffic, review shift reports, and provide coaching.
  • Collaborate with police personnel and campus constituents to address safety and security concerns.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to support security needs and special events.
• Training & Development
  • Develop and maintain a structured training program for new CSOs and student staff.
  • Ensure training covers necessary skills, procedures, and databases for effective security operations.
  • Implement training initiatives as designated by the Director of Community Safety.
  • Align training plans with performance expectations and track completed training per DPS policy.
• Budget & Procurement
  • Review fiscal budget plans and oversee purchases aligned with university procurement policies.
  • Ensure expenditures align with DPS policies for training, uniforms, and equipment needs.
• Other Duties
  • Support additional Security Services Department operations and other divisions as needed.
  • Adapt to evolving operational needs, schedule changes, and unforeseen circumstances.

Requirements

• Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
• Three years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications

• Leadership & Supervision – Ability to recruit, train, and manage staff while ensuring accountability and performance.
• Security & Safety Operations – Knowledge of security protocols, patrol oversight, and emergency response.
• Communication & Collaboration – Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging with campus partners and writing reports.
• Problem-Solving & Decision-Making – Critical thinking skills to assess security issues and implement solutions.
• Training & Development – Experience in designing and delivering structured training programs for staff.
• Technical Proficiency – Familiarity with security technology, radio communications, and data management.
• Budget & Resource Management – Ability to oversee budgets, procurement, and equipment allocation.
• Adaptability & Professionalism – Flexibility to work variable hours and handle unpredictable security needs while maintaining ethical conduct.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field.
• Experience in security or law enforcement.
• Prior experience in a supervisory role.

Schedule

• Security employees are expected to work shifts that may include days, evenings, and weekends.
• A regular schedule will be assigned, but shifts may rotate seasonally or due to staffing gaps.
• Flexibility with work shifts is required to provide essential security coverage.
• CSOs are expected to help provide security at special events on campus (athletic events, concerts, graduations, etc.).

Pay

• Starting salary range: $58,000 - $64,000.
• If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program.
