Community Organizer – Kern County (Part-Time Contractor)Shut Down CoreCivic California City CampaignCompensation: $35 hour (15–20 hours per week)Location: California City, Kern County, California (or nearby) Position SummaryWe are seeking a passionate and relationship-driven Community Organizer to join our Kern County organizing team. This organizer will play a key role in strengthening local leadership throughout California City and surrounding communities by identifying, engaging, and developing residents who want to build a future beyond immigration detention. The organizer will support campaign goals by sustaining relationships with community members, expanding partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and faith communities, and helping cultivate a strong network of local leaders who can continue organizing beyond this project.The organizer will work closely with the California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance (CIYJA), Core Civic out of Cal City, and the Dignity Not Detention Coalition, and local California City partners to build lasting community power and advance the campaign to shut down the CoreCivic detention center. Primary Responsibilities Community OrganizingIdentify and build relationships with California City residents who support ending the harms of immigration detention.Conduct one-on-one outreach with residents, business owners, faith leaders, and community organizations.Re-engage community members who have previously participated in campaign events.Identify and develop emerging community leaders.Collaborate with DND organizers to plan Fall pilgrimage in Cal CitySupport local leaders in co-facilitating meetings and organizing activities.Provide political education on immigration detention, community safety, and campaign goals.Help community members develop messaging that reflects their authentic experiences and local concerns.Organize residents to attend city meetings, public hearings, and campaign actions, including providing public comment. Leadership DevelopmentBuild meaningful relationships that encourage long-term leadership.Facilitate monthly/biweekly community meetings.Lead leadership development and political education workshops.Coach members in organizing skills, advocacy, public speaking, and campaign leadership.Help establish sustainable local leadership that continues organizing beyond the five-month project. Partnerships & Coalition BuildingStrengthen relationships with local organizations, businesses, and faith communities.Represent the campaign at coalition meetings and community events.Collaborate with statewide partners to advance campaign strategy.Support multi-sector organizing efforts throughout Kern County.
