Communications Systems Technician
Summary
The role supports safe and effective transit operations by performing preventative and corrective maintenance on communication and fare systems. The full pay range is $29.96 to $44.94 per hour, with an anticipated starting rate between entry ($29.96) and midpoint ($37.45) of the range. The actual hourly rate is determined by various factors including skills, qualifications, experience, education, certifications, and internal equity considerations.
About the role
This position is designated as safety-sensitive and is subject to Valley Metro RPTA's Drug and Alcohol Program. It requires a valid Arizona Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurability under Valley Metro's Vehicle Insurance Policy. The position also necessitates obtaining a Class B CDL permit within 90 days of New Employee Orientation and a full Class B CDL with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and support network, communication, and fare collection systems, including SCADA, CCTV, and PA systems.
- Maintain communication infrastructure and fare collection equipment, including variable message boards.
- Identify, gather, and test necessary parts; safely work with electricity; and operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment.
- Respond to emergencies and maintain detailed inspection, repair, and inventory records.
- Support cross-functional projects, system upgrades, and technology implementations to improve operations.
Requirements
- Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience in communications systems maintenance, network hardware diagnostics, SCADA operations and troubleshooting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Additional education cannot be substituted for experience.

Physical Demands / Work Environment
- Work is performed in a combination of office/vehicle/outdoor setting with routine use of standard office and specialty equipment.
- This role requires heavy physical exertion; exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
