Communications Specialist-Part Time (Time Limited)

Major Responsibilities

Coordinate the editorial production of the school's weekly e-newsletter (CA Weekly), including helping to plan editorial content, gathering submissions, researching and writing stories, editing copy, formatting and testing each publication, scheduling distribution, and publishing the newsletter.

Research, interview, draft, edit, proofread, and publish compelling written content for a variety of institutional communications across platforms and channels—including website copy, news stories, marketing materials, scripts, and other communications—while thoughtfully representing the diversity of the Cary Academy community through a broad range of voices, perspectives, identities, and experiences.

In collaboration with the Digital Media Specialist, support Cary Academy's social media presence by drafting, publishing, and monitoring social media content that reflects the school's brand voice and advances institutional communications goals.

Identify and develop story ideas by cultivating relationships across the school community and identifying opportunities to highlight the people, programs, and experiences that define Cary Academy.

Develops written content supporting key institutional priorities, including admissions, development, strategic initiatives, school events, and other Communications initiatives.

Assist in the planning, research, writing, editing, and proofreading of feature stories and other long-form content, including the CA magazine and other institutional publications.

Collaborate with members of the Communications team to develop coordinated storytelling across print, digital, social, and multimedia platforms.

Provide editorial support for video and multimedia storytelling projects by assisting with scripting, reviewing edits, and offering feedback to strengthen story structure, messaging, and consistency with Cary Academy's brand voice.

Engage actively in the school's diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism work to further Cary Academy's commitment to equity and justice.

Essential Skills

  • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and interviewing skills with the ability to produce compelling content for a variety of audiences and communications platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly understand and write in an established brand voice while adapting tone and style for different audiences, purposes, and communications channels.
  • Strong storytelling instincts, including the ability to identify compelling stories, ask thoughtful questions, and transform interviews and source material into engaging content.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize competing deadlines, and follow projects through completion.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, polished work with a high degree of editorial quality.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to cultivate relationships across the school community and collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, faculty, parents, and external partners.
  • Working knowledge of email marketing platforms, content management systems, and social media publishing platforms is preferred. Experience with Constant Contact, Blackbaud, WordPress, or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AP Style and standard editorial practices is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required; experience with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field preferred.
  • At least one year of professional or substantive internship experience in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, English, or a related field is required.
  • Additional professional experience is preferred.

Work Schedule

Days: This position is intended to maintain a regular on-campus presence. While the ideal schedule includes consistent engagement with the school community throughout the week, flexibility may be considered for the right candidate based on experience, qualifications, and departmental needs.

HOURS: This position is scheduled to work 20 hours per week. The specific work schedule will be developed collaboratively with the selected candidate to best support the needs of the Communications Office and the school community.

Position Term

This is a part-time, temporary position expected to begin as soon as possible and continue through the end of the Fall 2026 semester (mid-December 2026). While the position is funded through the fall semester, there may be an opportunity for extension based on institutional needs and available funding.
