Communications Representative (per diem)

Responsibilities

  • Answer and dispatch calls on hospital emergency lines, including familiarity with emergency preparedness policies for internal and external disasters.
  • Handle code calling for various emergency codes (e.g., Code Bat’s, Code Met’s, Code PCI’s, Code Grey, Code Orange, Code 123 Red, Code 911, Code Mr. Green, Code Adam, Code 8’s).
  • Monitor and dispatch alerts for devices (e.g., medication refrigerators, warming cabinets) when temperature thresholds are out of range.
  • Direct call traffic to appropriate areas using various information databases.
  • Maintain and update on-call schedules and records of medical staff vacations or absences to ensure proper coverage.
  • Speak clearly and in a proper tone to ensure understanding in all capacities.
  • Familiarize with all hospital departments and procedures for contacting different areas.
  • Adhere to Communications Departmental and hospital policies, including those for emergencies and disasters.
  • Follow scripts when answering calls at the switchboard.
  • Overhead page requested medical and hospital staff based on requests.
  • Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff/self-development as outlined in performance reviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure smooth operation of the department.

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience

  • One (1) year of telephone and customer service experience.
  • Computer experience; medical terminology is a plus.
  • Basic keyboarding skills required.

Special Skills

  • Courteous and helpful disposition with patience.
  • Ability to meet and speak with the public as the "first contact" of the hospital.
  • Articulate and able to clearly give directions to locations within the hospital.
