Communications Intern - Fall 2026 (Hybrid or Virtual)

MEND is a hunger relief network serving Essex County, NJ, for over 45 years. We're a community-driven hunger relief network that increases access to fresh, healthy food while convening partners, residents, and leaders to build stronger, more equitable food systems across Essex County.

Position Overview

The Fall Communications Intern will join us during our busy year-end season to help showcase our community's impact. Working with the Manager of Communications, you'll write, design graphics, edit videos, photograph, and support event planning to build a solid portfolio. This role offers flexible virtual or hybrid options with manageable hours, plus optional on-site visits to capture stories across Essex County.

Who We're Looking For

• Currently enrolled in or recently completed a program in communications, graphic design, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field
• Hands-on experience or strong interest in video editing, graphic design, and multi-platform content creation
• Strong writing skills with sharp attention to voice, visual aesthetics, and detail

Primary Responsibilities

• Visual & Digital Content Creation: Design graphics, edit short-form/long-form videos, and produce engaging visual content for social media, newsletters, and campaign materials
• Storytelling: Develop written and visual content featuring partner pantries, community members, and MEND's impact for year-end appeals and digital channels
• On-Site & Virtual Capture: (Optional) Visit partner pantry sites and mobile markets to capture photos, video footage, and firsthand community stories
• Campaign & Event Support: Assist with creative assets and communications planning for the Green Bean Gala and Fall/Year-End campaigns
• Media & Audience Research: Research nonprofit content trends, target donor personas, and potential media or local influencer contacts

Community Engagement

This internship offers meaningful, direct engagement with pantry partners, community members, and organizational stakeholders across Essex County. You will attend site visits and events, collaborate with staff who work directly with the people we serve, and leave with a firsthand understanding of how food access, health equity, and community-driven solutions intersect.
