About the role
Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) is seeking a One-Year-Only (OYO) faculty instructor to develop curriculum and teach Communication courses to a diverse student body. The instructor will use multiple methods of instruction, assessment strategies, and appropriate technology to engage students in learning and promote student success. Classes may be taught in various modalities, including in-person, hybrid, and online, and may include daytime or evening sessions at the Union Hills campus. The role requires a commitment to excellence in service, collaboration, and innovation within the Communication and Liberal Arts Division.
Responsibilities
- Teach a diverse student population, including high school programs, using in-person, hybrid, accelerated, and online formats, with a focus on learning-centered strategies.
- Demonstrate innovation in teaching, learning, and scholarship to enhance student success, retention, and completion.
- Incorporate instructional technology and alternative delivery methods into teaching.
- Develop instructional materials, curriculum, syllabi, course outlines, and assessments.
- Assess and evaluate student knowledge and monitor scholastic records; use assessment results to improve instruction and student learning.
- Maintain office hours to assist and advise students, promoting learning and personal development.
- Engage students outside the classroom in activities such as clubs, undergraduate research, and internships.
- Develop and cultivate relationships with high schools and universities to promote transfer pathways for students.
- Stay current with trends and developments in the field through research, conferences, and professional development.
- Participate in college and district activities, including department/division meetings, committees, and projects.
- Collaborate with faculty to evaluate and select classroom materials and contribute to the academic life and mission of the college.
- Demonstrate intercultural competence in interactions with students, staff, and the community.
Requirements
- Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field, such as:
- Communication, Speech, Speech Communication, Communication Studies, Interpersonal Communication, Mass Communication, Communication Education, Public Address, Applied Communication, Health Communication, International Communication, Intercultural Communication, Organizational Communication, Political Communication, Performance Studies, Rhetorical Criticism, or Communication Theory.
- OR Master’s degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credit hours in disciplines such as:
- Human Communication, Communication Studies, Speech, Speech Communication, Oral Communication, Rhetoric, Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Organizational Communication, Health Communication, Nonverbal Communication, Pronunciation, Phonetics, Oral Interpretation, Storytelling, Communication Education, Small Group Communication, Applied Communication, International Communication, Legal Communication, Conflict Resolution, Assertive Communication, Listening, Public Address, Political Communication, Rhetorical Criticism, Counseling Communication, Therapeutic Communication, Verbal Communication, Communication Theory, Mass Communication, Performance Studies, or Strategic Communication.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree (or higher) in Communication, Communication Studies, Human Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Speech Communication, Intercultural Communication, Organizational Communication, or Communication Education.
- Three or more years of teaching experience in 100-200 level communication courses at a community college or university.
- Demonstrated experience applying active learning approaches to enhance student engagement and understanding of communication concepts.
- Experience using a variety of formal and informal assessment methods to gauge student learning and teaching effectiveness.
- Experience teaching a diverse student body with varying levels of educational preparedness, with a commitment to closing achievement gaps and fostering a supportive learning environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading or collaborating with students and colleagues in settings such as course design, committee involvement, student clubs, or supervising student projects.
- One year of full-time relevant MCCCD experience during the previous two years.
Special Working Conditions
- May require possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D Driver’s License or other state license; must meet district minimum driving standards.
- Travel to campus during the interview/selection process will be at the candidate’s own expense.
- May require travel or assignment to all MCCCD locations, including the Black Mountain campus.
- May require teaching evening and/or weekend classes in face-to-face, hybrid, or online formats.
- May require prolonged periods of standing, sitting, and viewing a computer screen.
- May require lifting or carrying up to 25 lbs.
Pay
$51,774 - $99,672 annually, dependent on experience (DOE).
Schedule
- 30 hours per week, 9-month work calendar.
- Must be available to teach in a variety of course modalities, including in-person and online classes.
- Projected start date: August 14, 2026.
