About the Role
We are seeking a high-calibre Metals & Minerals Analyst to deliver robust, data-driven analysis of commodity markets, particularly iron ore markets, with flexibility to extend coverage into the downstream steel value chain and end-use demand sectors. This role sits within the Market Analysis & Economics (MAE) team and plays a key role in shaping iron ore market outlooks, price formation, and strategic narratives to support commercial, strategy, and leadership decision-making. The successful candidate will combine strong analytical capability with intellectual curiosity, translating complex market signals into clear, actionable insights.
- Translate market intelligence into long-term commodity price forecasts and near-term decision support.
- Monitor key signposts across iron ore and broader ferrous markets, synthesising market developments into timely and actionable insights.
- Develop analysis primarily on iron ore markets (demand, supply, pricing), with flexibility to expand into steel, raw materials, and end-use sectors (e.g., construction, manufacturing, trade flows).
- Assess linkages across the value chain to strengthen integrated market views.
- Conduct primary and secondary research on key structural and cyclical themes (e.g., decarbonisation, policy/tariffs, geopolitics, technology shifts).
- Translate findings into clear reports, scenario analysis, and long-term forecasts.
- Lead and enhance core analytical frameworks, including long-term iron ore demand models, short-term supply/demand balances, short-term cost curve development, price outlooks and scenario analysis.
- Collaborate closely with peer analysts cover steel and freight analysis, Technical Marketing, Strategy and Market Intelligence teams to develop aligned, data-driven views.
- Distil complex analysis into clear, persuasive narratives for senior stakeholders.
- Support a broad range of internal stakeholders through regular updates, reports, and insights.
- Deliver high-quality presentations to internal and, external stakeholders.
- Contribute to MAE’s ongoing development of analytical tools, data infrastructure, and modelling approaches.
- Enhance data visualisation and explore advanced analytics.
Requirements
Strong commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility, and adherence to the BHP Charter and Code of Business Conduct. Experience in commodity market analysis, preferably within iron ore, ferrous markets, or related value chains. Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down complex issues, and extract actionable insights under conditions of uncertainty and time-pressure. Ability to connect upstream commodity markets with downstream demand drivers and macro themes. Strong communication skills, with clear and structured written output and effective presentation and stakeholder engagement. High level of intellectual curiosity, and ability to operate in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment. Advanced Excel modelling, PowerPoint and Power BI (or equivalent visualisation tools) capabilities. Ideally, experience with Python / SQL and AI-assisted coding (e.g., Copilot, Snowflake Cortex, or equivalent tools) for automation, data processing, and rapid prototyping. Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. Economics, Business, Engineering, Statistics). Post-graduate qualifications highly regarded.
