Commissioning Intern
Position Location: Remote - work from anywhere in the United States. Must be located near a major airport.
Travel Requirements: Up to 75% domestic travel; relocation may be considered for long-term project needs. Must have a valid driver’s license. Potential international travel based on project needs and skillset development.
About the Role
The Commissioning Intern is an intern/co-op role focused on gaining foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in commissioning. This role provides technical support in inspection, validation, and testing of electrical and mechanical equipment. The Commissioning Intern will primarily assist senior team members, following structured test scripts, setting up test equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and reporting standards. The role operates under immediate supervision.
Responsibilities
- Assist with On-Site Inspection, Testing & Validation (50%)
- Observe and participate in factory witness testing
- Observe startup activities
- Learn to use technical equipment to perform testing
- Observe and learn about functional testing of equipment and electrical, mechanical, and controls systems
- Troubleshoot system components
- Assist in the Development of Testing Plans & Procedures (20%)
- Assist in the development of commissioning plans
- Assist with preparation of pre-functional checklists
- Assist with preparation of functional performance test scripts
- Assist in the Review of Construction Related Design Documents, Drawings and Specifications (15%)
- Learn to review shop drawings and submittals
- Learn to review sequence of operations
- Assist in commissioning-focused design reviews
- Reporting (15%)
- Assist in the preparation of project progress reports for internal and external stakeholders
- Assist in preparation and contribute to the final commissioning report
- Manage personal hours using company tools
- Complete assigned tasks and deliverables on time and on budget
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements
- Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and controls system principles (beginner level)
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams)
- Exceptional organizational skills for file management
- Ability to complete assignments accurately and with attention to detail
- Ability to leverage AI and emerging technologies to streamline workflows and optimize operational processes
- Ability to work successfully in a remote environment through effective communication, self-motivation, and resourcefulness
- Ability to follow company and site safety requirements
- Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports, and correspondence
- Effective oral and written communication skills (technical and non-technical information)
- Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with supervision
- Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines
- Ability to achieve certification for NFPA 70E and/or OSHA training as required
- Organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Valid driver’s license
Physical Demands
- Frequently manipulating, moving, or grasping small parts, devices, or tools
- Frequently required to remain in a stationary position
- Frequently moving through office, critical facility, and other environments (including low/high temperatures and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind), including tight and confined spaces
- Frequently descending/ascending stairs and ladders to access equipment
- Occasionally required to position self under or over equipment
- Occasionally required to move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
Certifications
- Must be able to obtain NFPA 70E / OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certifications as required
Education & Experience
No education or experience required. Technical certification or relevant coursework in engineering, electrical, or mechanical fields is a plus.
Growth Pathway
This role provides a structured learning path to progress into Technician II (Level 2, Step 1-4), gaining more autonomy in executing tests and troubleshooting.
Pay
$24 USD per hour.
