Burns & McDonnell offers an exciting opportunity for a Staff Commissioning Engineer to join our national Commissioning team. Work alongside engineers, architects, construction teams, and owners on challenging projects, contributing to their success as an employee-owner within a multi-discipline team.

About the role

Manage jobsite startup and commissioning activities, interfacing with owners and facilities managers to develop and implement a commissioning process that supports project acceptance and turnover. This role involves travel (50% of the time, including potential international travel) and may require short-notice travel, periodic weekend work, and extended workdays depending on project needs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and execute commissioning, retro-commissioning, and energy-related projects.
  • Plan, schedule, and perform work for small to mid-size projects; support project teams for large projects and programs.
  • Participate in meetings with owners, operations, maintenance, design, and construction personnel to align commissioning goals and schedules.
  • Prepare commissioning plans, specifications, checklists, and functional test documentation.
  • Review design documents, equipment submittals, operation and maintenance manuals, start-up reports, checklists, and training programs.
  • Perform site visits to coordinate commissioning, evaluate systems, and witness equipment start-up and testing.
  • Conduct functional testing, document results, and identify performance issues.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to recommend solutions for non-conformance items.
  • Assist in developing and refining commissioning methodologies, tools, and standards.
  • Train operations and maintenance personnel on system upkeep and continuous commissioning programs.
  • Complete OSHA 30-hour Safety Training within the first 3 months.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university preferred; industry experience will be evaluated.
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct commissioning or related experience in startups and testing of facility systems (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, digital control systems).
  • Experience with central utility plants, healthcare facilities, prisons, laboratories, airports, building automation systems, test & balance, NETA electrical testing, renewable energy, or other specialties is a plus.
  • Certification in the Commissioning Process (CxA, CCP, BCxP), Energy Management (CEM), or LEED Accreditation is a plus.
  • Experience in ASHRAE level energy audits and energy savings calculations from retrofits is a plus.
  • Strong facilitation, team-building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • High degree of trust, integrity, and respect; ability to foster teamwork.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance.

Pay

$100,000.00–150,000.00 yearly, based on education, qualifications, experience, and work location. Total compensation includes base salary and eligibility for a discretionary year-end incentive bonus.
