Commissioning Engineer

About the role

The AWS Infrastructure Services team is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. This includes managing the design, construction, and operation of data centers and associated equipment to ensure continuous access to innovative cloud services.

Responsibilities

• Support the construction and commissioning of various systems such as power systems, HVAC, chilled water systems, BMS, EPMS, and testing and balancing.
• Lead Factory Witness Testing (FWT) and manage third-party commissioning vendors in the performance of onsite pre-functional, functional, and integrated systems testing.
• Provide multi-discipline input into the scheduling, test script development, designing, and planning of projects.
• Review component submittal packages, lead FWT, perform system level and integrated system testing.
• Audit activities to ensure compliance with environmental, quality, and safety requirements.
• Communicate lessons learned and collaborate on program improvements.
• Coordinate site activities, prioritize tasks, and ensure each issue has a clear path to resolution.
• Manage the project commissioning vendor's scope of work, including identifying issues, determining criticality, proposing solutions, and documenting findings.
• Escalate project turnover risks to appropriate stakeholders.
• Communicate lessons learned to help peers on similar projects in flight and participate in initiatives that drive improvement to the commissioning program.

Key job responsibilities

• Provides testing and validation oversight of AWS data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
• Reviews design documents, leads FWT, and manages third-party commissioning vendors in the performance of onsite pre-functional, functional, and integrated systems testing.
• Takes ownership of project successes by diving deep to resolve technical issues and having bias for action to address ever-changing schedule and coordination demands onsite.
• Communicates lessons learned and collaborates on program improvements.
• Maintains full transparency, records metrics of manufacturer/contractor/equipment issues pre-PFHO, and identifies opportunities for all peers and customers.

About the Team

The AWS Data Center Commissioning Team (ACx) is a wholly independent business within the DCGS organization. This team of veteran professional Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Controls Engineers, Architectural Engineers, Project Managers, Operators, and seasoned Amazonians are uniquely positioned to provide deeply detailed engineering and operational review and testing of equipment designs, operational functionality, and construction practices. We focus on ensuring the rapid delivery of a quality product while maintaining full transparency, recording metrics of manufacturer/contractor/equipment issues pre-PFHO, and identifying opportunities for all our peers and customers.

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or 5 years of relevant discipline work experience.
• Advanced knowledge Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, Outlook required; advanced knowledge of SharePoint (or similar) preferred.
• Strong communication skills, detail oriented, highly organized, and able to work in high-stress environments to maintain calm and respectful interaction with multiple teams.
• Advanced knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and controls systems for critical infrastructures.
• Experience developing and executing test procedures for mechanical or electrical systems/components based on design intent and approved equipment submittals.

• Ability to read and edit construction documents (design drawings, control diagrams, specifications, etc.).
• Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally for up to 80% of the year.
