About the role
The Commissioning Engineer II is responsible for leading and executing commissioning activities for electrical/mechanical equipment and systems to ensure they operate according to project specifications and client requirements. This mid-level role involves participating in training sessions and contributing to project coordination efforts while ensuring quality and timeliness in all commissioning activities. This position will work independently or as a lead on a team to manage assigned commissioning projects, perform complex testing and validation, and resolve issues. The Commissioning Engineer II plays a crucial role in ensuring that electrical/mechanical systems are safe, efficient, and meet high-quality standards.

Cook up to coordinate and execute onsite electrical/mechanical commissioning work.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Commissioning Leadership
- Lead the commissioning of electrical/mechanical equipment and systems, including power distribution systems, control systems, and backup power systems.
- Manage commissioning projects from planning to completion, ensuring adherence to project timelines and budgets.
- Conduct site observations and prepare field reports on the status of projects with respect to compliance.
- Commissioning and Validation
- Ensure commissioning procedures meet the project specifications and requirements.
- Review, evaluate, and approve electrical/mechanical test results.
- Perform complex functional and performance testing of electrical/mechanical equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution
- Identify issues with electrical/mechanical equipment and systems during the commissioning process.
- Develop and implement effective solutions to address identified problems.
- Identify customer needs and resolve or escalate issues/needs to appropriate parties.
- Review Drawings and Submittals
- Assist in engineering design reviews and interpret design specifications.
- Review and evaluate drawings and submittals to ensure compliance with design specifications and project requirements.
- Provide technical feedback and recommendations based on the review of engineering documents.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Compiles and reviews written commissioning schedules, reports, scripts, and procedures for switching, energization, and isolation methods for testing and commissioning work.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of commissioning activities, including test results, equipment logs, and inspection reports.
- Provide daily reports of equipment testing performed each day onsite.
- Safety and Compliance
- Ensure all commissioning activities adhere to all safety regulations and procedures while performing commissioning activities.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and client specifications.
- Support the safety culture and ensure safe working conditions.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Communicate with the client/site construction team regarding project daily activities.
- Liaise with project engineers, internal commissioning staff, and other team members to ensure successful project execution; monitor the performance of vendors, contractors, and other third parties.
- Respond to RFIs when requested by the Project Management team.
- Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to provide updates on commissioning activities.

- Knowledge of electrical/mechanical systems, equipment, and testing procedures.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills with the ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos; able to write complex correspondence.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Proficiency in Commissioning Software Applications (CxAlloy, Compass, Procore, etc).
- Ability to multi-task and effectively manage time in a dynamic environment while maintaining flexibility under changing demands.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret electrical/mechanical drawings and schematics.
- Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to questions from diverse groups with varying levels of technical expertise.
Experience and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of hands-on commissioning experience in data centers, including one year of performing as lead commissioning engineer.
- An in-depth understanding of electrical/mechanical and controls systems, and equipment functional operation.
- Ability to obtain an OSHA 30 certification.
- Knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC) ASHRAE, and OSHA Electrical Safe Work Practices.
- Knowledge of use, limitations, and maintenance of all Personal Protective Equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Combination of office and field work environment with frequent travel to project sites (throughout the United States); must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and must be insurable.
- May require working in various environmental conditions, including construction sites, operational facilities, and energized equipment up to 136kV.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability and willingness to work occasional overtime as needed.
- Potential low exposure to various conditions, including dirt, heat, fumes, smoke, water, noise, vibration, grease, oil, and dust.
