Comic Book Creation (Part Time, After School, In-Person)
Position Overview
Concorde Education is seeking an engaging, student-centered Comic Book Creation Instructor to facilitate a short-format after-school enrichment course for students. This course provides an interactive, project-based introduction to comic creation as both a storytelling medium and a visual art form. Students develop original characters and narratives while learning foundational comic structure, page layout, and illustration techniques.
What You Will Teach
Students will learn how to plan and produce a comic or short graphic narrative from concept to final draft. Depending on grade level and available resources, learners may create comics using traditional materials (pencil/ink, paper) and/or digital tools (school-approved apps for drawing, layout, or publishing). Lessons emphasize story planning, scripting, panel composition, visual clarity, and revision processes.
Major Topics Can Include
- Celebrate comic conventions and visual storytelling fundamentals
- Create characters (appearance, traits, goals, motivations)
- Structure plots (beginning/middle/end, conflict, pacing)
- Write scripts (scene planning, dialogue, narration)
- Panelize and layout pages (flow, composition, framing, perspective)
- Add speech bubbles, captions, lettering, and readability
- Employ visual techniques (expressions, body language, action lines, tone)
- Ink, shade, and finish artwork (age-appropriate)
- Storyboard, draft, and receive peer feedback
- Publish comics in various formats (mini-zine, booklet, digital PDF, slideshow comic)
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a 10-session course with clear objectives and engaging, hands-on instruction
- Lead students through the full creative process from concept development to a finished comic artifact
- Provide technique demonstrations and structured supports for varying skill levels
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment aligned to site policies
- Facilitate constructive peer feedback routines that emphasize respect and growth
- Communicate professionally with site staff and Concorde program contacts regarding attendance and session completion tracking
- Adapt pacing and activities to match student readiness while maintaining course outcomes
Qualifications (Required)
- Minimum of 60 college credits (or Associate degree in progress/completed)
- Experience with comic creation, illustration, visual storytelling, creative writing, or a related field
- Experience working with school-age students in structured settings (school, camp, after-school, tutoring, youth programs)
- Strong facilitation skills, clear communication, and comfort leading creative projects
- Reliable, punctual, and professional; able to follow school policies and program boundaries
- Comfort supporting students with traditional and/or digital creation tools, depending on site resources
