About the role
This technical position involves independent on-site inspection of primarily residential building, plumbing and electrical installations to assure compliance with State and County regulations and requirements.
Responsibilities
- Inspect building, plumbing and electrical installations during construction; examine completed installations for use of proper materials and procedures
- Maintain records of inspections
- Check plans and specifications for installations
- Confer with a Chief Inspector on difficult enforcement problems
- Respond to electronic, telephone and in-person inquiries regarding residential building, plumbing and electrical code requirements and other departmental issues
- Drive a County vehicle to various sites throughout the County to inspect building, plumbing and electrical installations during construction and upon completion to assure the use of proper materials and procedures
- Prepare and maintain forms and reports related to inspections performed
- Access the permits tracking system and other automated data sources to research, review and verify information
- Perform building, plumbing and electrical plan reviews on commercial projects and other structures, as needed
- Perform other related duties as required
Requirements
- High school graduation or the equivalency
- Minimum 9 years building work experience that must include either plumbing or electrical installation work experience
- Possession of the following certifications or ability to obtain, and maintain, the following certifications within six (6) months:
- ICC Residential Building Inspector – B1
- ICC Combination Residential Inspector – P1, E1 and M1
Qualifications
- Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
- Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices involved in installing, repairing and maintaining a variety of building, plumbing and electrical installations
- Working knowledge of the International Building Code, Plumbing Code and the National Electrical Code
- Ability to obtain, and maintain, the following certifications: ICC Combination Residential Inspector – B1 within 6 months of hire; P1, E1 and M1 within 18 months of hire
- Ability to effectively understand and interpret plans and specifications
- Ability to determine any violations of applicable codes and ordinances; to evaluate corrective actions and to approve work
- Ability to effectively access and utilize computerized systems and equipment
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, co-workers, and the general public
- Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills with the ability to effectively complete required paperwork

Pay
- Compensatory and/or overtime eligible
