About the role

This technical position involves independent on-site inspection of primarily residential building, plumbing and electrical installations to assure compliance with State and County regulations and requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect building, plumbing and electrical installations during construction; examine completed installations for use of proper materials and procedures
  • Maintain records of inspections
  • Check plans and specifications for installations
  • Confer with a Chief Inspector on difficult enforcement problems
  • Respond to electronic, telephone and in-person inquiries regarding residential building, plumbing and electrical code requirements and other departmental issues
  • Drive a County vehicle to various sites throughout the County to inspect building, plumbing and electrical installations during construction and upon completion to assure the use of proper materials and procedures
  • Prepare and maintain forms and reports related to inspections performed
  • Access the permits tracking system and other automated data sources to research, review and verify information
  • Perform building, plumbing and electrical plan reviews on commercial projects and other structures, as needed
  • Perform other related duties as required

Requirements

  • High school graduation or the equivalency
  • Minimum 9 years building work experience that must include either plumbing or electrical installation work experience
  • Possession of the following certifications or ability to obtain, and maintain, the following certifications within six (6) months:
    • ICC Residential Building Inspector – B1
    • ICC Combination Residential Inspector – P1, E1 and M1

Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices involved in installing, repairing and maintaining a variety of building, plumbing and electrical installations
  • Working knowledge of the International Building Code, Plumbing Code and the National Electrical Code
  • Ability to obtain, and maintain, the following certifications: ICC Combination Residential Inspector – B1 within 6 months of hire; P1, E1 and M1 within 18 months of hire
  • Ability to effectively understand and interpret plans and specifications
  • Ability to determine any violations of applicable codes and ordinances; to evaluate corrective actions and to approve work
  • Ability to effectively access and utilize computerized systems and equipment
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, co-workers, and the general public
  • Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills with the ability to effectively complete required paperwork

Pay

  • Compensatory and/or overtime eligible
  • Full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
