College of Liberal Arts-Purdue Polytechnic Institute Postdoctoral Fellow
Purdue University’s College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and Purdue Polytechnic Institute (PPI) seek a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to support the Purdue University Books Initiative. This one-year, full-time, 12-month fellowship (with potential for a one-year renewal) is designed for Ph.D.s transitioning to careers beyond academia, such as industry or publishing.
About the role
The Fellow will serve as an interdisciplinary expert at the intersection of applied innovation and scholarly publishing, synthesizing complex research in technology to help PPI faculty translate technical breakthroughs into authoritative, book-length contributions. The role includes extensive mentoring in technical and scientific writing, developmental editing, and project management.
Responsibilities
- Advance scholarly book projects with PPI faculty by assisting in manuscript development, idea refinement, and structural planning.
- Provide expertise in academic writing and publication, including audience and market analysis.
- Adapt tasks based on project status, manuscript progress, and faculty authors’ experience and needs.
- Support faculty in drafting, editing, and preparing manuscripts for academic publishers.
- Translate specialized technical language (jargon) into clear, effective prose.
- Compile and present data in visual formats (e.g., tables, charts) when applicable.
Qualifications
Required: Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric & Composition, Communication, Writing for the Sciences, Science and Technology Studies, or a closely related discipline.
Preferred:
- Experience writing at the intersection of rhetoric, writing, and computer science.
- Editorial experience and prior publications.
- Skills in project management, manuscript drafting, editing, proofreading, and data visualization.
Pay
$65,000 annual salary.
