College Internship

About the role

CAIR-SFBA interns work with leaders on substantive projects that lay the foundation for a more just and inclusive America. They develop professional skills, gain insight into the impact of public service, and work across departments to understand the daily operations of a non-profit civil rights organization.

Responsibilities

Interns will gain hands-on experience in one of the following departments:

• Civic Engagement
  • Organize meetings with local elected officials to discuss issues affecting the Muslim community.
  • Assist with voter registration campaigns.
  • Act as a liaison between CAIR and public officials.
• Communications
  • Inform the media about Islamic activities and practices.
  • Monitor local media and write editorials.
  • Assist in issuing the CAIR-California newsletter.
  • Develop journalistic writing skills.
  • Engage the community through social media: create posts, updates, tweets, and more to promote CAIR-SFBA’s image.
  • Learn how the media works and develop press releases and media packets.
• Event Planning/Outreach
  • Organize events sponsored by CAIR (e.g., Muslim Day at the Capitol).
  • Propose and create new promotional materials.
  • Prepare exhibits and help with inquiries from members and guests.
  • Act as a liaison between CAIR and local Muslim and non-Muslim communities.
  • Organize outreach programs with Islamic centers.
  • Develop and implement strategies to attract individuals to become involved with CAIR.
• Operations
  • Work closely with the Operations Manager to maintain office productivity.
  • Assist with daily operations: coordinate staff meetings, trainings, and activities.
  • Greet guests and interact with patrons.
  • Assist with office organization projects.
  • Participate in membership activities: donor and community outreach, development of membership programs.
• Youth Development
  • Implement CAIR’s youth programming for high school and college students around identity, leadership development, civil rights, civic engagement, and social justice.
  • Programs include the Muslim Youth Leadership Program and the Muslim Gamechangers Network.
  • Research issues affecting the Muslim community to develop relevant and engaging curriculum and program content.
  • Work on all aspects of program planning: marketing, outreach and recruitment, program execution, and evaluation.

Qualifications

• College students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree, or recent graduates (17 and older).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office platforms.
• Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
• Passion and familiarity with the work that CAIR does.

Schedule

• Internships typically last 10–12 weeks, depending on the student’s academic calendar.
• Fall/Spring internships: 15 hours per week.
• Summer internships: 20 hours per week.
• Hybrid schedule: in-office minimum two days per week, with Friday as a mandatory on-site day.
