College Intern - Traffic

About the role

RK&K is hiring a Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Traffic team in Richmond for the summer of 2027. The internship is for Civil Engineering Students in the Transportation discipline.

Responsibilities

• Provide traffic engineering support for projects ranging from small scale studies and design for isolated intersections to complex solutions for Complete Streets corridors and major highway systems.
• Aid in the preparation of design plans for traffic control devices including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control/work zones, lighting, design of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, toll systems, traffic calming, and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS).
• Perform field investigations, collect and compile traffic data, evaluate traffic safety and operational conditions for all road users, and develop recommendations for improvements.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering with an interest in transportation or traffic engineering.
• Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Skills And Qualifications

• Classwork in traffic engineering.
• Participation in professional societies (ASCE, ITE).
• Applicable prior internship experience.
• Working knowledge of MicroStation/AutoCAD, GIS, Synchro, Vissim, HCS.
• Exposure to traffic engineering references (MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, AASHTO guidelines).
