College Intern - Traffic
About the role
RK&K is hiring a Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Traffic team in Richmond for the summer of 2027. The internship is for Civil Engineering Students in the Transportation discipline.
Responsibilities
- Provide traffic engineering support for projects ranging from small scale studies and design for isolated intersections to complex solutions for Complete Streets corridors and major highway systems.
- Aid in the preparation of design plans for traffic control devices including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control/work zones, lighting, design of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, toll systems, traffic calming, and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS).
- Perform field investigations, collect and compile traffic data, evaluate traffic safety and operational conditions for all road users, and develop recommendations for improvements.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering with an interest in transportation or traffic engineering.
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Skills And Qualifications
- Classwork in traffic engineering.
- Participation in professional societies (ASCE, ITE).
- Applicable prior internship experience.
- Working knowledge of MicroStation/AutoCAD, GIS, Synchro, Vissim, HCS.
- Exposure to traffic engineering references (MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, AASHTO guidelines).
