About the role
The Inpatient Coding Specialist III supports accurate, complete, and consistent coding practices for the production of quality healthcare data. This role requires proficiency in coding complex inpatient cases using ICD-9/ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and ICD-10-PCS codes for procedure cases.
Responsibilities
- Apply the correct ICD-9/ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes to inpatient cases
- Use ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient procedure cases
- Strive for optimal reimbursement
- Floating between different coding areas as needed
Requirements
- Inpatient Coding (facility) in an Acute Care Hospital experience preferred
- 2+ years medical record coding experience in an acute care environment
- Knowledge of DRG assignment and reimbursement regulations
- Experience coding through an encoder
- Proficiency with Windows based applications
- Coding for pediatric cases preferred
Qualifications
- High School graduate or equivalent
- One of the following certifications/licenses: CCS-Certified Coding Specialist, RHIT-Registered Health Information Technician, RHIA-Registered Health Information Administrator
Skills
- Knowledge of ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT classification systems
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Able to adapt to frequent policy and procedure changes
- Able to maintain accuracy, work independently, and resolve problems effectively
