Summary
Under the direction of the Manager of Coding Policy and Education, this position researches coding and documentation guidelines, develops training materials, performs audits, and educates coders and providers.
Responsibilities
- Consistently apply corporate values of respect, honesty, and fairness while improving patient health through high-value services.
- Research and compile coding and documentation guidelines from reliable sources into a user-friendly manual.
- Record and publish training materials on the Brown University Health Intranet and conduct education sessions.
- Review and coordinate feedback from external audits, track audits, and report on key coding metrics.
- Stay updated on coding updates and notify the Manager of any pertinent changes.
- Create and assist with educational processes, including lesson planning and materials.
- Monitor validators for violations and report to appropriate managers.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Participate in various committees and task forces.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in medical coding/validating.
- Certification required: CCS, CPC, RHIA, or RHIT; specialty certification a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
- Three to five years progressively responsible experience in outpatient coding, preferably in a large, multispecialty physician group or complex academic medical center.
- Experience with Epic and a high level of knowledge in ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding methodologies.
- Independent action within departmental policies and procedures.
