Job Overview
The Academic Peer Support position is designed to promote the inclusion and success of students with intellectual disabilities in college coursework and campus life. Peer supports work closely with students to assist with academic tasks, model appropriate college behaviors, and encourage independence while providing guidance aligned with each student’s individualized goals. This role is best suited for students who are patient, flexible, and comfortable supporting peers who may learn, communicate, or engage differently than traditional college students.
Job Performance Responsibilities
- Provide academic support by assisting students with assignments, coursework, and study strategies
- SUPPORT UNDERSTANDING OF COURSE EXPECTATIONS BY HELPING CLARIFY INSTRUCTIONS AND BREAKING DOWN TASKS
- Encourage and MODEL APPROPRIATE COLLEGE BEHAVIORS (E.G., CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION, COMMUNICATION WITH FACULTY, USE OF CAMPUS SPACES)
- Foster STUDENT INDEPENDENCE BY PROMOTING PROBLEM-SOLVING AND SELF-ADVOCACY RATHER THAN COMPLETING TASKS FOR THE STUDENT
- AID WITH TIME MANAGEMENT, ORGANIZATION, AND STAYING ON TASK DURING ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
- Facilitate SOCIAL INCLUSION AND POSITIVE ENGAGEMENT IN CAMPUS LIFE WHEN APPROPRIATE
- COMMUNICATE REGULARLY WITH COASTALLIFE STAFF REGARDING STUDENT PARTICIPATION, PROGRESS, AND ANY CONCERNS
- ATTEND REQUIRED MONTHLY MEETINGS AND TRAININGS WITH COASTALLIFE STAFF
