About the role

The athletics program at Excel Academy Charter School aims to provide students with opportunities to develop leadership, overcome adversity, build character, and positively impact their high school experience. Coaches play a crucial role in achieving this mission.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and lead daily practices focusing on skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and competition preparation.
  • Coach and supervise student-athletes during all scheduled games, tournaments, and school-approved events, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the coaching staff to support player development, program alignment, and smooth progression within the volleyball program.
  • Uphold and enforce all school, league, and athletic department policies, including expectations related to conduct, attendance, and eligibility.
  • Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes by promoting academic responsibility, respectful behavior, and good sportsmanship.
  • Aid in equipment management, gym setup and breakdown, and maintaining a safe and organized practice and competition environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework or degree preferred.
  • Previous experience playing soccer at the high school or collegiate level, or demonstrated knowledge of volleyball rules, strategies, and skill development.
  • Ability to work effectively with high school-aged student-athletes and support their athletic, academic, and personal growth.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate with athletic staff, school administrators, parents/guardians, and students.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and development-focused team culture.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including afternoons, evenings, and weekends as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior coaching experience in a public or charter school setting at the youth, club, middle school, or high school level.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of the season).
  • Experience supporting player development pathways and collaborating with Varsity coaching staff.

Benefits

Stipend: Head Coach $3,000 per season, plus postseason bonuses; Assistant Coach $1,750 per season, plus postseason bonuses.

Schedule

Hours: 4 - 6 days/week for approximately 10-16 hours per week (afterschool time and weekends)
