CNC Programmer
About the role
CNC Programmer will prepare operating programs for various production CNC machining centers using Master CAM software. Programming for drilling, tapping, milling, boring, and other machining operations over a range of surfaces, diameters, and depths in order to meet engineered specifications. Must determine operation sequence, select and adjust tools, and proof test CNC programs for each planned machining operation. May occasionally work as operator to meet production requirements.
Responsibilities
- Develop programming for various CNC machines using Master CAM software; determining proper feeds, speeds, and cutting tools; and maximizing efficiency of cutter paths.
- Prepare work instructions for setup and recommend the use of inserts, fixtures, and tooling for various job operations.
- Partner with Engineering and Manufacturing departments to develop safe and efficient part programming and processes that support lean manufacturing goals.
- Manage programming-related files on the company network to maintain accuracy, security, and ease of access.
- Write and create CNC programs and method sheets for the machine shop before machining operations begin.
- Oversee produced CNC programs to ensure optimization using programming software.
- Monitor machining times and optimize them by implementing new techniques and methods.
- Maintain and update the CNC program database, ensuring revisions match engineering technical drawings.
- Work closely with machinists to assist with preparing, optimizing, and updating programs to improve machining and part knowledge.
- Operate various machines occasionally to provide backup to shop floor operators as needed.
- Set up, program, operate, and troubleshoot CNC lathes and mills with minimal assistance.
- Perform daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on CNC machinery after operation.
- Use gages and measuring instruments to ensure tolerance requirements.
- Perform quality assurance tests to ensure products meet design specifications.
- Support engineers by providing input on design and prepare SOPs for setup and operation for operators.
- Load programs in CNC machines and instruct operators on setup.
- Troubleshoot problematic setups and document changes.
Requirements
- Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) from a two-year college or similar degree from a technical school; or 5+ years related experience and/or training working as a machining center programmer or operator; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a CNC Programmer in a heavy equipment manufacturing industry.
- Experience on a variety of CNC-controlled machines; experience on manual machines will also be considered.
- Minimum 5 years’ knowledge of and experience working with steel.
- Ability to interpret, read, and comprehend G & M code programs (experience preferred).
- Mazatrol programming experience desirable.
- Overhead and Jib crane experience required.
- Ability to apply basic math skills, fractions, micrometers, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations, and convert decimals into inches.
- Must be able to read and interpret a tape measure, machinist measuring tools, blueprints, and bills of material (BOMs).
- Commitment to growing lean knowledge and using tools to identify and assist with continuous improvement.
- Skill in working efficiently and accurately to keep up with production requirements.
- Safe material handling skills in working with steel.
- Capacity to learn quickly; parts machined are unique to manufactured equipment and change orders are frequent.
- Flexible and adaptable in coping with pressures, deadlines, and rapidly changing situations.
Work Environment
Shop manufacturing environment with exposures including moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools, equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions, and risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times, consistent with an industrial assembly facility, and may require hearing protection.
